Follow on question: is a PhD required for MLS in general? Sounds like a cool job and I'm considering pivoting towards it (from flight controls engineer) but don't want to go back to get a PhD.
I don’t have a PhD :) I’m an applied scientist
How come ?? I thought your resume is not shortlisted for applied scientist roles if you don't have PhD.
This may depend on company. I started as SWE though
And I know plenty of people with masters that started as AS

Is meta really worth the wait?
Applied scientist is the official title and job family. MLS is sometimes used as a business title but it maps to AS. Unless the title is MLE in which case it’s not. Research and publications vary by org. Some AS teams are research heavy others not as much. However, there is an expectation to submit to internal/external conferences as part of your role if you’re L5+
What about research scientist?
Research scientist does all of the above you mentioned. You’re not expected to be able to write production code as RS and that’s what distinguishes it from AS. AS is expected to be code like L4 SDE in addition to science and modeling and therefore they get paid a bit more than RS
