Likely very soon I'll be leaving MS, I feel like I'm going to miss the hell out of C# and visual studio. Any tips for improving the transition to new tools? Does anyone think with more of .Net becoming open source and cross platform there's a chance it will pick up stream in other companies? Or do you think proposals to use it would get shot down?
There are some startups using MS stack like some of the business services companies. But just learn Java or Python for backend or JS for presentation tier and get IntelliJ's tools. They are not as good as Visual Studio but they are pretty good.
IntelliJ is almost exactly the same as Visual Studio for C# with ReSharper. The switch to Java should be really easy and Java 8 has functional goodness to make it closer to C#. Ultimately C# is a superior language though, IMHO.
I've never used C# professionally but I always wished Java had done generics like C# -- in the VM -- instead of at compilation time.
is every company mostly Java now?
its too late for .NET. I'll admit visual studio is pretty nice but you'll do better than C# with other tech out there
Visual Studio Code is used everywhere. You can also use .Net in many companies.

Thank you AAPL and NVDA
That's tough to say. Maybe for new projects, but a lot of companies already have too much invested in other languages.
