I'm a L5 SDM @Amazon. One of my direct employee under me is not performing upto the SDE-1 bar for about 3 months. His yoe @Amazon is 2 yrs as f now. Before moving on him into Pivot, I would like to put him into dev plan as per the Amazon process. / A / During the 3 month window as well, I felt like I micromanaged him a lot. I kept mailing him regarding daily updates/ pointing fingers for every mistakes that he did etc.. / A / 1. Am I in any sense look like a bad Manager? Because of point / A /? 2. What further steps should I make?
You never know what he is going through. My suggestion 1. Give him his tasks and ask for timelines. 2. If he doesn’t perform, inform him that he is put in performance plan and give him a heads up. Micromanaging is not good for both of you, as u will leave a bad impression. And that could be the reason he is not motivated to perform.
+1 do you really thing micromanaging and pointing fingers on every tiny mistake helps. He is maybe totally scared to do anything (wrong). Better work on the relationship and assign him a buddy in a team, ask what’s wrong, maybe he is going through a divorce etc
Come on guys the guys trying is best and seeking advice. Perhaps mentor ship isn’t available at Amazon. I still think you guys point out some good points, seek out a mentor or build a mentor network but no need to trash the guy as human. Also TC or GTFO
What makes you think he won't read this?
Seen this a million times. By the time micromanagement starts it’s over, employee loses moral, gets burned out. Dreads coming into work. Performance goes down further, management signals he may need to leave if he doesn’t pick it up. Performance drops further due to stress. Employee gets fired, has ripple effects across his career
What's wrong with people here trashing him for along advice on an anonymous forum. He's at least trying, and there are so many who wouldn't even try.
He just wants a second opinion. Big deal And in any case better than those who don't know and don't ask either
He’s been at amazon for 2 years but he has only just now not been performing? How was is performance for the first year and a half?
How long has he been in your team? Why started underperforming 3mo ago?
Relax. He is just leetcoding, will leave soon. Bye your PIP
1. Yes, because you posted this question here. 2. Delete the post, get a mentor in Amazon, discuss it there.
