How would you recommend handling a situation where your manager is close with their boss, and your manager is keeping opportunities away from you? I’m trying to expand my role but am actively discouraged when I voice interest.

Aside from leaving the company… what action would you take?

Beat him in his own game.

    1. Don’t show the frustration
    2. Continue to do what you are doing
    3. Once in a while setup 1:1 with his boss and don’t complain
    4. Ask for opportunities

Will have to report back after I try asking for a 1:1 with boss’s boss… also their “open door” also means anything I’ve said to boss’s boss gets reported back to boss. Trust me, tried it with something trivial.

In my previous work place, I asked my manager about career growth opportunities. He was new and didn’t know. I asked some one up in the ladder who is heavily involved in career growth opportunities. Her response was you should talk to your manager and your responsibility is to complete the task that is assigned to you. My boss was also more focused about his growth over helping me in anyway. My intention was not to ask for a promotion.

Since there was no hope I started looking for a job.

I have a feeling that is the situation here too. More important for them to grow, apparently, and that is evident in our conversations.

Always have 1 on 1 , one to two levels up. That will only give u visibility and promo and opportunities. I did twice with my immediate Mngr, once a month with skip, once a quarter with double skip

This wouldn’t be possible here. Or at least not without a lot of grief about “well what do you need to talk to him about? I’ll take it to our next 1:1”

OP in here telling everyone why they can't take the advice. So all that's left to do is find another job where the dynamic you're experiencing doesn't exist.
