Manager in one of the core infra teams wanting to become a VP

Nov 25, 2021 22 Comments

I just became a manager in one of the core infra teams at LinkedIn. I have worked on storage and search infra and I am overall very strong in distributed systems. I have almost always got exceeds rating and I am a very strong IC. I got into management because I am genuinely interested in the kind of work and want to give it my best shot.

TC: 540k, YOE 9

Goal is to do well, enjoy work and get close to VP one day.

Any tips please?

You will achieve your goal one day. BUT it will not be because of your IC skills or earlier good ratings. At director and above level, it is less about your individual contributing capabilities and more about how you can bring the best out of your team. What is it that your can bring on the table to convince the board that your synergy is essential? Obviously luck will also play the role.

First of all, no offense but come out of that IC shell otherwise your past glory will become the hurdle of your future.

Express this to someone who is in leadership, take on non IC responsibility, grow that scope. Manage more people and apply internally. Good luck πŸ‘

  • go/techcpp and look at expectations for Sr Manager. Or I have a shortcut: join a bank and become VP instantly.

With this attitude and work ethic, it might happen. You need lots of luck though. Either join a startup that might become successful or play the game within one of these large companies. How long have you been managing?
