Manager offering promotion in exchange of stay

I'll be honest. It sucks to beg. I worked hard like never before. Everyone appreciated the work i did for the team. But won't be getting that promotion if don't agree to manager's terms. It happened the second time in last one year. Manager wants to make a deal in exchange of promotion. If i take then he's expecting me to stay. when i asked them about it, they said they dont want people leaving after promotion. Does it really happen at your companies too?

Get your promotion and do the fuck you want.

I thought I'd end up burning the bridges. I know that's stupid on my part.

Clearly your manager doesn't care about burning a bridge with you if they want to make a promotion conditional like that.

How would he even enforce that? And no I haven't heard of this happening.

That is shit... Honestly, this does not encourage an environment of mutual trust and growth. If the manager doesn't have confidence in the brand or product, you should start searching for new opportunities. There are plenty around

Simple rule: do what’s best for YOU. Morality is a weakness

I agree.

This is a stupid question Every manager will expect the employee to stay for some time after promotion. Weather thats happens is a separate issue On the other hand why would you want the promotion if you really wanna move out, just focus on interviewing rather than taking additional responsibilities

If the guy deserves promotion based on his current performance he should get it without further conditions. Leaving after promotion will help to negotiate in the next company.

Promotions are not 100% based on performance in the real world. Its a lot about perception and building your brand. If the manager wants to promote folks he thinks will stay for long in the team that’s his criteria.

I got a promotion and i left 2 weeks later..It was shocking to the managers..

Microsoft MicroABC Sep 4, 2019

How did the exit interview go? Did they grill you?

Oath bxgeuqn OP Sep 4, 2019

Did the bridge burn? How's your relation with manager now?

LinkedIn Wiener Sep 4, 2019

Ask for a huge promotion stock package, which is enough to keep you from moving. If that is not satisfied then you are free to jump ship. Does that bridge worth anything?

VMware doof_s Sep 4, 2019

Wtf is with all this bridge burning phobia....? Do what you want as long as its ethical and legal, no one gives a shit after a few years. Ppl move on , new opportunities get created every day with no connection to the old.. take a chance

Salesforce owowhtsths Sep 4, 2019

Your manager is already burning bridges with you by demonstrating they have no loyalty to you outside of blackmail. You do what you want, just make sure you keep solid references that are silod from the managers influence.

Make your decision on whether you want the responsibility and hopefully pay bump. Don't let it stunt your career growth, even if that means leaving and risking burning that bridge. A good manager wouldn't try and hold that kind of condition over your head. You've got a insecure first line so consider that as well.
