The job market is absolutely brutal right now
We were having our 1:1 and my manager just mentioned this out of the blue. My current manager took over my team after my previous manager left a month after I joined the company. The thing is I did negotiate and apparently even that was a lowball. He said he will try to get my salady adjusted end of this year but it got me thinking that I must have been lowballed big time. So this means either a. hr screwed me royally or b. my previous manager screwed me what would you do in this case? bail? initial offer: 160k tc negotiated offer: 220k tc current tc: 180k thanks to stock drop location: non austin tx level: zp3 (sde2 basically) yoe 4 edit: Not complaining btw. Just wanna hear what others would do in this case.
Sounds like your current manager is bad ass. Underpaid for sure. But partnering with a good manager can be rare these days. Good luck my dude

This happened to me once too, it was very hard for manager to adjust comp, it took almost a year, and was raised like 8%, in the end I just left to increase salary by 30k not too long after.
Permanently report to your current manager if possible

Your previous manager didn't screw you. They simply didn't see the need to tell you if you're much lower than others or market... Coz that would mean dealing with a situation.
Previous manager may not have really known either depending on their visibility and experience. HR for sure should and are notorious for screwing people. Prob a big reason we have so much attrition in many companies in the first 2 years
If I’m op’s manager, I’d fight hard for a better comp but not necessarily tell op. It’s not necessarily good when you raise a problem without providing a solution. Op will likely spend many cycles thinking about this before eoy, and I’d argue that it might not be good for the perf.

Your new manager sounds like someone to learn from. Weigh that when you consider leaving. Also, it's possible that how you interviewed influenced the offer. To get the top of the range, requires flooring everyone on the loop (inclusive of the recruiter) or you've got a skill no one else has.
They offered me 80k+10k as an L5 Product Marketer, with 5 yoe as PMM and 10 yoe total. I negotiated up to 100k+30k and the rec said it was the absolute max, they would need L9 approval to beat that. I was top-ranked on my team and was teaching L6 senior product marketers how to do their jobs in my first year, and in my performance review I was given a 2.4% base increase. Nothing else. The primary leadership principle for HR is frugality. Edit: I joined during the pandemic so I took what I could get, including their bs downlevel.

A great manager will fight to maximize the comp of people on their team. I know this because Both my current and previous managers do this. My last manager told me during hiring process not to accept a penny less than what I was asking and later promoted me. The current one fights for my quota to maximize my comp, and takes my input and sends it up the chain. It sounds like you have found a great manager. I’d stick around for a while longer, as no amount of money will replace the experience of working for a manger who supports you well when your next manager proves to be a cowardly cog in the machine. Give your manager six months and then decide if the relationship warrants another six months for the TC correction. He may surprise you. As others have said, it sucks to leave a great manager.

180k is still good money based on the gas price you provided, if that would make you feel better. I would feel reliefed by being told being low balled. Imagine the new manager said nothing.

Looking at Zoom offers at levels.fyi for Texas, the real problem seems after the stock drop. Manager probably trying to make sure you don't leave. In other words, leave.
