Hello folks, I had interviewed with Amazon for L6 Sr. Innovation and Design engineer role in Seattle and also my current company for Sr. Manager role in Columbus,Ohio. While Amazon only offered L5 engineer role, my company offered me the manager role. Amazon told me I did not raise the bar for L6 but my ramp to L6 would be in a year or so. Should I take the Manager route or start again with Amazon? Yoe - 7 Amazon offered 120 base, 55 bonus for 1st and 41 bonus for 2nd year and 60 RSUs while my current company offered 165base, 25 Sign on bonus and have some RSUs that deplete by 2021. Confused if I should take the leadership with my current experience or start with Amazon as an L5, learn new stuff and try for L6. Appreciate your comments/thoughts 😀
Sign on is only for 1st 2 years, but your RSU vests pretty early, I believe. Don’t quote me on this as I’m still learning about the growth aspect of comp at Amazon, but I do know the recruiters making the offer typically keep room for comp growth in mind, so by your 3rd year & on you won’t need the sign-on bonus.
I think you have to consider your long term goals and the environment to help you get there. What kind of scale/complexity/scope of influence do you want? Is there room for growth? Do you want room for growth? If you take the manager role, where would that lead you? If you take the Amazon role, where would that lead you? One compensation is geared towards immediate benefits, and another is geared towards benefits 3-5 years down the road.
(Cuz idk what the market values of those RSU are to compare those options)
Thank you chungpc. I need the room for growth definitely which I think Amazon provides more since my current company is struggling with growth and sales. If I take the manager role, that would provide me to lead a team of 4 initially and then director role next within a year or two, to lead a team of 16. Project line up is good for the next 3 years. If I take the Amazon role, there will be initial struggle with cost of living and new team, but i can learn and compete aggressively to push for the L6 promo, not sure if i would get it though in a year like the recruiter told me. Learnings would be immense I guess given the cool projects that Amazon is doing. I agree on the immediate vs long term play, and i think long term play is wise. market value of current RSUs is 15k currently for next two years (vesting)
