Managers control everything

At Amazon, unlike other companies I’ve worked for, managers control your performance reviews and raise. Your peer reviews don’t really matter. So all the newbies, please suck up to your managers. And don’t get on their bad side.

    No. Not same everywhere. Amazon has no checks and balances. Your manager can be psycho and can just punish you and there are no repurcussions.

    Generally manager’s manager is the true power. If skip is very happy with you then your manager will not want to screw you and in fact try to promote you

    Why would you willingly be on a manager's bad side? I couldn't care enough about work to legitimately have an interpersonal conflict. At such a large company, it is impossible to really fix everything and guarantee any success from an individual perspective. So fundamental disagreements with a manager that lead to distasteful interaction is a waste of my life.

    This is just not true. Just like anywhere in the world managers here only have so much power (coming from someone who has managed here 4 years). If you are up for promo, others have to weigh in and approve. If you aren’t performing and need to go on pivot, HR has to review and approve. If you want to expense something that is costly, managers need to double check what can/can’t be approved. Nowhere in that does the manager have full discretion. They may let on that they do (if they suck) but they don’t have full control, nor should they.
