Masters Degree

I'm a BI manager/architect and my company will pay 100% tuition. I'm considering going for an MBA, but also considering an MS in CS with a concentration in machine learning/AI. Any thoughts? MBA seems like it would open more variety of doors, but AI is getting big.

I'm required to work full time while studying. Currently there is no requirement to stay with the company after graduation. That could all change, however. Company is Unifrax.

if your working more schooling is a waste. you can learn anything on the internet.

not true. if getting into a new field/specialty the degree pays off. the degree also gets you the connections in the new field. for me going BS -> MS was 50% bump in pay, and MS to PHD was 250% bump. of course, the bump in pay were due to job change, made possible by University connections

they are not paying for you getting the degree they are paying for the knowledge. you can learn any job.

MBA vs ML really depends what you want to do. Ml includes far more math and coding, and MBA assumes management and dealing with politics. Make decision based on what you enjoy, and what type of stress is more tolerable to you.

Most ML problems outside of research orgs are about scale and implementation - less about algorithmics. Make sure your masters focuses on implementation details if you want the knowledge to pay off in an engineering role

Don't waste your time unless it is a top 10 program and you want to move into management or biz consulting.

University of Illinois has a really good online program for CS with a data science specific track. Top 5 CS school, mature online program, no distinction from the on-campus master's.

college is largely becoming bs.. if you need to sit in a school to be programmed to half-ass do a job, then you don't have enough fire to succeed. I barely graduated HS and currently am working at my 3rd fortune 100 company clearing $150k... it's doable, you just have to work hard, learn, teach and have a little luck.
