I’m curious about research teams, but many require an MS at minimum. I have a BS and it’s from a Top 3 engineering school, but I didn’t get ML research experience as an undergrad. I thought I could get away with gaining relevant experience at an ML team at Amazon, but I got stuck doing more CRUD, front-end, and pipeline monitoring. I enjoy the mathematical details of ML, and I realize the core modeling requires a PhD, but will having an MS help unlock higher level roles, like research engineer and ML engineer? Does professional master’s vs. thesis master’s make a major difference? #master’s #machinelearning #machinelearningengineer #research
I actually prefer Engineers for the Data Scientist(a term I’ve never liked but have come to accept), Data Engineers, and ML/AI Engineers I’ve hired over my career. I’ve worked with PhDs, Developers, and Chemical Engineers that are way smarter than me and I’ve found Engineers(Chem, Elec, Mech) are the best for Data,ML, AI implementations. Engineers are already smart, you can grasp the concepts behind the math(don’t need to necessarily know the mathematical formula, but how to apply the model) and can learn to code. Ultimately we are usually trying trying to fix/solve a problem with different approaches and tools which Engineers are good at. This is from perspective of implementing solutions over the last 13 years, not research which I can’t speak to but I can speak to how to best develop and implement real world AI\ML solutions. I got my Masters in Analytics 10 years ago(before it was cool) at the advent of the data analytics boom and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I have an undergrad in Business and if I can make it in this space, you definitely can. Find a program with good foundations in cloud, data, business, development, and AI/ML to be well rounded and appealing to a broader spectrum. Go for it and find a role where you can get hands on experience which will build your confidence! You are an Engineer and this is not rocket science, you can do it.

Get a relevant phd if you want to do proper ml. Otherwise pipeline monitoring it is 😬
But then why do so many jobs require a master’s?
ml is a vast field now. A lot of it is general sw engg but requires understanding of ml concepts in depth. If you want to get into research, prepare for that in your phd / research focused masters. I feel 1.5 - 2 years with coursework is too little time to learn enough to do independent research in ml.
