Interested in Data Science, have been a SWE, is getting a Masters in Data Science worth it?
1. 4-year B.S. degree in CS 2. work a couple of years 3. $300k TC 4. quit for PhD in physics, make $25k/year for 5yr 5. land $200k TC "data science" job 6. ???
Funny thing is this is true. I once looked at open jobs at a physics national lab and was shocked to see the PhD research jobs have lower grades than app developer roles.
My intuitive reasoning according to economics physics research: low supply of labor, but extremely low demand for labor -> poor pay frontend app dev: high supply of labor, very high demand -> above average pay
Data science is a joke and will be a less than 100k salary soon. Don’t get caught in the hype.
A data scientist is a data analyst who lives in California
Or a statistician that uses a MacBook
Absolutely not. And don't do data science, it's mostly for people who can't code. Just take online courses, do a practice project or two and shoot for an ML engineer.
This. Most data science masters are actually business intelligence masters renamed to data science. I was getting one and switched to a masters in CS after a year. So much rapid miner and salford systems with so little coding.
There is more to it. Stats, math, ML algorithms. Isn’t that the whole point of ML/ AI ? Getting rid of coding and letting the algorithms learn itself
