#MeToo backlash. Have you witnessed?

Feb 12, 2018 51 Comments

Women, I am worried that there is going to be a massive backlash around this movement and may negatively affect women. Have you already started seeing/noticing this or is this just a figment of my imagination?

This movement is a causing men to be presumptuously criminalized for any sexual initiative. It also belittles the real sexual crimes committed on both women and men. Grouping together rape, and just creepy guy asking for you number at work should be discouraged. A movement like this should focus on the real crimes

      @8ulWZy:
Can you tell me exactly why they need the movement? What is the problem that it solves? We already have harassment, sexual harassment laws.

As far as I can tell, it is a matter of 1) community support 2) being able to destroy a man’s reputation with zero proof on a woman’s word (whether rightfully or wrongfully)

It's always been a power trip. Women have been hurt and it feels good to be able to lash back.

Female staffers and lobbyists have found “many male legislators will no longer meet with them privately,” reported The Miami Herald. “I had a senator say, ‘I need my aide here in the room because I need a chaperone,’ ” lobbyist Jennifer Green told the paper. “I said, ‘Senator, why do you need a chaperone? . . . Do you feel uncomfortable around me?’ ‘Well,’ he said, ‘anyone can say anything with the door shut.’ ”

“I’m getting the feeling that we’re going back 20 years as female professionals,” said Green, who owns her company. “I fully anticipate I’m going to be competing with another firm that is currently owned by some male, and the deciding factor is going to be: ‘You don’t want to hire a female lobbying firm in this environment.’ ”

If men start to back away from women, at least in professional settings, it’s difficult to see how that will aid the feminist cause.

... be wary of unintended consequences. Turning men and women into hostile opposing camps is not going to be good for either sex.

“In 2002, Mike Pence told the Hill that he never eats alone with a woman other than his wife and that he won’t attend events featuring alcohol without her by his side, either.”

I’m sure Pence would say that he’s just being careful. But I wonder if he realizes the discriminatory consequences of his rule. Over his career, he has had many colleagues and employees. With the men, he can have complex relationships that traverse work and social contexts, build trust, and eventually help their careers. A woman who hoped Pence would be a mentor to her, on the other hand, wouldn’t be able to avail herself of those opportunities, since he can’t even have lunch with her.

It's certainly a much needed movement (see: Harvey Weinstein) but the problem is the actions of a few can destroy the credibility of the entire movement (see: the Aziz Ansari debacle)

Unfortunately people are going to jump on the instances of misuse of this movement and drive a wedge with it

Oh yeah, people picked on his book too... I think there was also an element of lack of representation of minorities in entertainment + "scandalous" events. The story was blowout b/c he's a minority figure and people weren't used to an Indian celeb "acting out".

Agreed. I don't think this would have that big of a story if we were exposed to more minorities in entertainment.

Of course there will be a backlash. Who cares? The point is to bring attention to the matter. These things always prompt a defensive reaction first, and it usually takes years for people to analyze their behavior. Yes, there will be unfair claims, and frankly, I don't care. I have a hard time feeling bad about the tiny percentage of people this will affect, compared to the nearly 100% of women who have put up with this shit for their entire lives.

You're right. I apologize. I felt guilty as I typed it. Gut reaction after reading too much toxic garbage on Blind. I do feel bad for those who have their lives and careers ruined by false accusations. My point is that the backlash is inevitable, and I don't think that should stop people from sharing their stories.

Is this movement really out of control? No one is failing to see these misdeeds on a spectrum. And no one has demanded Ansari face charges like Weinstein should. But people are finally discussing how sexual coercive behavior hurts others--and that's a good thing.

It may not have become an issue in scale yet, but it is definitely losing reason and perspective. Ansari has not been tried or convicted (Thank God, I guess), but he stopped attending awards shows and probably even lost some awards because of that. So it is definitely impacting people's careers. And Matt Damon had to face a lot of heat just for saying there are various degrees in these issues and we should be mindful of them. So, yeah, there is a sort of lynch mob mentality right now, and silencing anyone who is trying to even talk about due process.

    • A couple of celebs had a little backlash. I hope that's as bad as it gets.

A ton of people are feeling empowered for the first time. Let's hope they don't let it go to their heads.

Oh absolutely there is backlash. Every movement goes through it though. The pendulum swings so far one way that society says, wait, that’s too far. I feel like it begin with the Aziz date story..

Like all things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.,The #metoo movement brought awareness that was needed, but then it went too far by including common date scenarios that are harmless.

This is the natural reaction to the too far phase, then everything will be back to normal soon

I think others have stated. We should treat this on a case by case basis. The automatic jumping onto someone for minor uncomfortable situations and equating it to rape has become a little absurd.

I didn’t read the article but I have seen on three occasions now where men from work have requested to not travel with female colleagues just the two of them

I think people are reacting to extremes right now and it will be back to normal at some point with added awareness
