Which one do you prefer to work at (non tech roles not eng). If you've done both - which one do you prefer in terms of interesting work? Thank you
Media is a cool, and you get a lot of opportunities specifically working with talent and on high-profile projects. But my experience is that most people in media under 40 are all trying to find their way to tech because the comp and work-life balance are so much better in many cases. I’ve been in media for 10 years now (my last company was pretty high profile too) and 60-90 hour work weeks are often the norm. Have been trying to get to tech for a few years but really tough to break into
I’m at your company and I’ve never felt expected to put in more than 30-40 hours a week. That’s crazy. That said, I agree with the flashy perks of the projects you mentioned and that most younger people want to be in tech. It’s really the VP+ levels that seem to enjoy this most out of working in media.
I’m sure it depends on role and level, etc but it’s always been that way for my group here. I’ve been Director level for a few years now...would definitely agree that VP+ love it but a ton of turnover in the trenches
Media, that’s where the money and power is at.
Yeah, I listen to Spotify when I lift, so power!
Media is cool if you are in a product role. I've worked at a few media companies and it's very much a meritocracy. You prove you are capable and get to work on cool stuff.
You get more if you've been there long enough to have made the products currently in use
Big media is a drain. Completely hierarchical, lots of politics, loudest voice wins. I doubt this is any different in tech, but at least in tech you get snacks, and your tech stack isn’t an antiquated pile of garbage.
Media is currently trying to become tech, and tech is trying to become media. There’s some not backwards media companies that will actually pay but (software) tech isn’t in the DNA for both better and worse.
I think your own work culture preferences are much more important. As mentioned on this thread, a lot of legacy media companies lack a culture that fosters discourse and technically driven product development. If that’s okay with you, you’d probably want in. FWIW Hulu falls in this bucket (I’m in tech). On the other hand, there are some media companies that are highly transparent and have achieved great product fit through equally great tech. What’s certain is that you’ll either flounder or become exhausted if the company you’re at doesn’t match your own culture profile. Know yourself and get in the culture boat that’s rowing in the same direction. FWIW I do think longform media companies have sufficient barriers to entry that big “tech” companies (not named amazon) would not be able to venture into without shareholder backlash, so either seems like fair choices but to my earlier point, I think culture fit is tablestakes before considering industry fit
