Received an offer from Meggitt for an E2 Mechanical Engineer position in the Los Angeles area.

Base: 92K
5K signing bonus
PTO: 2 weeks

Current TC: 86K
YOE: ~5 years
Level: E1
Joined Abbott: April 2020
Los Angeles area and similar commute distance so wouldn’t have to move.
PTO: 3 weeks

Thoughts:
TC isn’t really much higher than current TC to really be enthusiastic about this offer. But been wanting to leave Abbott because been frustrated over lack of promotion, and also I’m attached to a legacy program that I’ve lost a lot of enthusiasm for because the product tech hasn’t changed and the program doesn’t get much visibility compared to other programs devoted to more state of the art technology.

Don’t have a ton of exposure to doing FEA or metal fabrication at Abbott (much of the analysis and design got leveraged from the baseline product), which a lot of jobs I interviewed at over the past few months were looking for and were probably big reasons why I didn’t make the cut. Meggitt job seems like a good opportunity to gain more experience in that since they also would be attaching me onto a new product program. There would be some leveraging from legacy products involved, but to a lesser degree than what I am doing now. I foresee myself staying for about 1.5 years or until I feel like I’ve gained solid experience in FEA and metal fabrication to move somewhere else. It seems like Meggitt is experiencing a lot of turnover as well; team I interviewed with was pretty candid that a lot of engineers were leaving for other opportunities.

Also been wanting to get out of medical devices because it’s not an industry I foresee myself staying in, and I’m worrying about staying too long and creating a niche for myself.

EDIT: added PTO information

Consider joining Auto. Lots of opportunities coming up with the OEMs’ big investments into electrification. You can make bank too if you join an electric startup. Comp is not tech level but definitely better than medical and aviation

I’ve tried for Rivian and Toyota since I’ve seen postings come up for them around the LA area. I never really got called back for them. Seems like they like to see engineers who have done similar work related to things like metal parts fabrication or designing for parts in a highly dynamic environment, which is something I haven’t really had to do while at Abbott (devices are very small and designed to be implantable in human bodies). Been having the same problem trying to get interviews for defense and aerospace as well.

@honda - interesting to hear a new perspective. Seems like you’ve got a great gig. I’ve researched some new tech for aero and they’ve all come from auto like arinc854. It seems auto is making lots of new developments while aero is stalled out with the industry being a duopoly

@abbott - if you’re US citizen, try defense or govt. most commercial I find does very little new product development and if so, ME are just tasked with making square metal boxes

Aviation moves very slow and most likely you’ll have even less promotion chances because people that work in aviation are lifers. With that being said, I’d take the chance since aviation is big in LA so this will only open more doors.
