I had a phone call with a recruiter from Meta and have phone screen scheduled. I am L5 hardware engineer at Google and want to interview at IC6 at Meta. Recruiter said that the IC5 and IC6 loop is the same and based on interview outcome the hiring level would be decided. Could someone from Meta confirm this?

Also, she said that there is no hiring committee involved for hardware roles in reality labs. I would be interviewing with folks working in the same broader area. Could someone confirm this.

Leveling is decided after the interview depending on your experience and how well you do in the interviews. Going into the final round the recruiter will also ask you to fill out a “scoping” questionnaire. This is essentially to give them ammo to argue your level. It will ask you more specific questions about your experience. If you are looking for a higher level, the best shot at it is doing well in the interviews and trying to get “Strong Hire” ratings

That is correct, do well in the interview and the management will decide on the level based on the feedbacks.

Should you ask the recruiter on what is the target level during negotiations? Or you will know the level after successful interview?

Of course communicate your expectation from the beginning. The recruiter will likely tell you a range, say 5+. It doesn’t change the decision that is based on the interview.

As part of the negotiations, is it better to negotiate for a higher level (which automatically implies higher comp) or just negotiate for more salary (which will require them to level up if they want to hire you)?
