“Metaverse” is bullshit

“Metaverse” or whatever the fuck Zuck is calling it is dumb vaporware and I can’t believe technical people are getting suckered in by it. 1) It will never be technically feasible to build a version of the “metaverse” which people actually want to use. VR tech is not the limitation. 2) A federated, decentralized metaverse is not what Facebook will build or intends to build. Interoperability can never exist in a metaverse controlled by Facebook because it would threaten their ability to make money off of it. 3) Nobody will want to use the sanitized, sterilized, kid-friendly thing Facebook is building. Facebook’s entire play is to try and replace your other devices with a VR headset, but nobody will ever do that if it doesn’t include adult content, which it won’t. 4) The Facebook presentation was all pre-rendered made up fairytale horse shit that has no relation to anything that exists today or what Facebook will build. It’s a bunch of buzzwords and explains nothing about what the product is supposed to be, how it will actually work or how it is an improvement over something like VRChat. 5) Zuckerberg is either a grifter or a dumbass for fundamentally misunderstanding the point of Snow Crash. 6) This product announcement and rebrand is obviously a PR stunt to distract from the fact that the perception of Facebook’s brand has never been worse. Their other products have stalled. Pure desperation move. 7) This is not a criticism of VR/AR which certainly have their respective uses/markets. VR is not the important thing about the metaverse as it is commonly understood. You have to be a moron to buy into this nonsense and I will relish the day when Facebook has to pivot away from metaverse bullshit. All they’re going to build is a VR online game where you can have meetings and then say, “look we built the Metaverse”. If you work at Facebook you should be fucking embarrassed.

Zuck has a company to save. His Oculus bet is his last way out and it’s not going to look pretty.

Google ursus123 Jan 19, 2022

They sold 10 million units already 💀 It’s looking pretty damn good

Google jejndndid Jan 19, 2022

Face computer ain't happening bro.

Intel hllo,wrld! Jan 19, 2022

Do they use metaverse already for meetings as most are wfh?

Google bada Jan 19, 2022

I think Workspaces is still the primary way they communicate.

Microsoft JaiMetaDi Jan 19, 2022

It's so obvious that the Metaverse is just a distraction from Facebook's brand woes and regulatory scrutiny. The real suckers are the companies that echo it like it's a serious thing.

Let’s also not forget the ad revenue cut off by Apple. FB has a knife to sharpen by poaching Apple employees.

Ford rcbM31 Jan 19, 2022

FB is dead. Only used by boomers. When was the last time you actually logged AND posted something. I'll wait. OP posted this and I am a bit concerned. >> but nobody will ever do that if it doesn’t include adult content, which it won’t. Is FB moderating VR? Can anyone confirm this? Just keep it like the internet where there are no restrictions by the moral police.

Here is my prediction for the night. This post will not age well 🤣

Another metaverse proponent strikes

Google ursus123 Jan 19, 2022

FB is killing it with their oculus sales and coming out with more advanced products this year. It’s estimated they sold 10million units so far. People Love the oculus. The thing has phenomenal reviews. I don’t like fb but this an L post and L take. They’re gonna put a lot into this and people are loving it. This article below was dated before Christmas sales. Don’t forget that: https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2021/11/16/22785469/meta-oculus-quest-2-10-million-units-sold-qualcomm-xr2

Read the post. VR is not the reason the metaverse is bullshit.

Google ursus123 Jan 19, 2022

Alright let me actually go point by point…

Amazon kindsza Jan 19, 2022

I hope you are right but that is not obvious to me.

Google jejndndid Jan 19, 2022

Any word on usage? Daily active users.. monthly actives.. no because it's like Alexa. Ppl buy it but low usage. Google had goggles and Samsung had their vr thing. No one uses it

Meta IlIIllIl Jan 19, 2022

last earnings call zuck said they'd split out oculus numbers moving forward so we should find out soon

Google ursus123 Jan 19, 2022

10 million units sold as of Nov 2021

Apple nonamevaa Jan 19, 2022

VR will be mostly for entertainment purposes, FB might acquire a streaming media company like Netflix for their content. AR will be revolutionary. Also I like the fact that no one asked your TC 😉

The Metaverse will need a killer app. GTA 6 on it would be pretty dope. If Zuck was smart, he’d sell a ‘sanitized’ version of it, and a ‘full adult’ version of it. If it kid/family friendly apps and games, it will fail hard. Also, MSFT purchase of more gaming IP, means they are taking the metaverse seriously as well. Can FB buy Nintendo? Think of Mario 64 in Metaverse. All kids will be on it.

Netflix nflxanon OP Jan 19, 2022

The brand risk to Facebook of including adult content on their platform is too high for them to ever allow it. I guarantee they will never include adult content. Even John Cormack has said this.

Parental control will be another issue

Google bada Jan 19, 2022

Buys Oculus, goes back to using YouTube. VR180 is pretty nice though.
