Hey all Recently started at Microsoft, but stupidly already maxed out my pretax 401k before moving. I see that Microsoft matches pre tax and Roth up to the limit. If I put in 19500 after tax contribution could I convert it to Roth and still get Microsoft's match for the year? #microsoft #microsoftbenefits

  • No Roth or after tax Roth matching.

Just 50% matching on the pretax 401k up to max contribution amt.

I think Microsoft matches 50% up to the $19,500 limit, so you'd only get $9,750 tops.

  • You can't get match on after-tax. You probably can remove your old contribution, recharacterize it as after-tax and contribute to pre-tax/Roth at Microsoft. You should consult some tax advisor or just a better source than Blind to see your options.
By the way, if you also contribute after-tax at Microsoft you can convert it to Roth in plan.

    • What is the difference between after tax and Roth? Both are tax paid

So there are three buckets - 1. pretax, 2. roth, 3. after tax - 1+2 have an annual max of $19500 total and is what employers match on; some plans allow employees to contribute to bucket 3 allowing you to go up to $58,000 per year - $58,000 includes $19500 annual max from buckets 1&2, employer match, and then anything extra you contribute to after tax
