I currently work in the DC metro area and my current salary is $210K (20+ year experience) No bonus or stock options but the usual benefits like 401K, health benefits, ESPP etc....I have an offer from Microsoft and it's L64 (Sr. PM role in Azure). I tried my best for L65 but no luck. Here is the offer breakdown Base - 150K (this is $60K less than my current base) Sign-On Bonus - $20K Stock Option - $50K (5 year vesting) - 12.5 per year Performance Bonus - 20% (10% UBI and 10% CBI) - minimum of $30K but could be more Clearance Bonus - $22.5K (15% of base) Annual Stock Grant - $25K per year
This is so low in all divisions. L64 salary should be somewhere around $175k Initial stock grant should be ~$200k minimum, $300k average. I am talking about SWE but PM shouldn’t be that different Edit: my numbers assumed Redmond location
Clearance, DC area, you're a JEDI data center monkey. TC is pretty solid for someone who's job is going to be to physically go into data centers and try to debug shitty code by having someone else read you error messages, and then you relay those back to Redmond.
Everything seems low compared to Redmond, but are they adjusting for COL? Is Reston col a lot lower?
Reston or Northern VA is expensive but definately lower than Redmond/Seattle and Bay area of course.
The offer says that the UBI bonus and CBI bonus is 10% a pop (target) but the range is 0 - 30%. I have a buddy in MSFT and he told me that he has gotten 20% consistently. It all depends on performance and how the group/divison is doing I guess but wanted to know from the MSFT guys. Can I expect this to be 10 to 15%?
It’s more likely going to be around 10%... ubi = universal basic income?
If you’re getting UBI, that’s Services, not Azure (product team) unless there’s something new with JEDI I haven’t heard about. Also note that the ongoing bonus / stock numbers are target (ie 100%). The range for engineering is 0% -200%, so none of that is guaranteed. It’s likely you’ll hit 100%, but not guaranteed. When you start also matters for your first stock grant in Sept. you have a few months - not sure the exact date. It’s tough to hire in as an L65 and tough to get promoted. But JEDI is massive, so the odds are better than anywhere else in the field IMO. Good luck and welcome to Microsoft!
When I was L62 and my base is $149K I’m not in Washington
Why would you take a massive pay cut?
Because working with spaghetti code is fun.
Well yeah but MSFT and FAANGs are all about bonus and stock is what I have read and told. For ex: When I add up all the numbers - my first year is almost the same or a bit better but the problem is, there is a BIG astriex on the bonus, stock grant - says "performance based" but should be able to get target. So when I do the math 150K (base) + 15K (bonus 1) + 15K (bonus 2) + 22.5K (Top Secret) + $20K (sign on bonus) + 12.5k (1/4 of the 50K signon bonus - vested number)
What is UBI and CBI??
UBI = Utilization-Based Incentive (UBI) Bonus CBI = Core Priority-Based Incentive (CBI) Bonus I was told that UBI is "billable hours". So as long as I hit my target for the year. CBI - not sure. I think this is based on the division's performance etc..
What org is this in? Base and initial stock both seem low for L64 (all of the bonus work is predicated on level + base). Should be able to negotiate both up.
Services
This makes infinitely more sense then. Still think you probably have 5-7% of room to negotiate on base and probably 30-40% on initial grant. There's a huge hiring push for field roles with security clearance after the JEDI win but at the same time there's a huge talent pool in greater DMV area with similar backgrounds.
WA doesn’t have state income tax if this is for Redmond.
Location is Reston, VA - so basically no change for me - DC metro in general
I was going to say this base is low for WA but not sure about VA
