hey folks - don’t know anyone at HBO, and levels.fyi doesn’t help, so wondering if the community here can provide this info. Which position at HBO (their streaming group) would be roughly equivalent to L67 GEM (Group Manager for Engineering) at Microsoft? Current details below: TC: ~$500k YoE: 15 Team Size: Between 40 & 50 (As to why I am bothering to leave - nothing too important, just looking to do something new)
Op - did you join HBO?

The culture is toxic and there is a synergy next year if you heard the news. The higher the position, the more likely to be laid off.
67 manager is GEM? What do they call 67 ic ?

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
Not familiar with GEM—is that like a general manager, a people management role? Assuming so, you’re probably looking for a director of engineering role. Right now we’re not doing a good job with principal engineer ICs.
Thanks slakcer. GEM stands for Group Engineering Manager at Microsoft. Its a role where you manage multiple teams (who have their own managers). I had assumed that director would be an apt role. What is the typical team size under a director? When you say HBO is not doing a good job with Principal ICs - do you essentially mean that leveling of external candidates into Principal roles at HBO is not being handled properly?
I’m guessing each director has about four or five leads, each with about five to seven devs (don’t hold me to this). We’d like grow further, but our IC hiring is gated on lead hiring. (IOW we don’t have enough leads to support the target number of ICs)
