hi all, im a current Microsoft PM. Title: PM2 YOE: 3.5 TC: 135 Base + 15K last cash bonus + 5K stock all of my sign on stock is already vested i got an offer from Amazon Title: PM 2/L5 TC: 145 Base + 80 Cash (over two years) + 100K stock (over 4 years) I was told that I’m interviewing for a team that has both L5 & L6 roles and was offered an L5. 1. Has anyone been able to negotiate their way into an L6 when the Offer was for a L5? 2. Is there any room to negotiate a higher salary for an L5? 3. Would you take the L5 at Amazon or stay at Microsoft as a PM 2? #amazon #microsoft #programmanager #offer #negotiateoffer
My L6 PM offer was similar but with TC just over 200k... as a new grad MBA with 0 Pm experience ;)
Why you want to leave MS?
Money and growth
Legend. I need to get into MS or G. Make my parents proud.
You're being screwed tc wise by Microsoft and level wise by Amazon. If there aren't any interviews lined up then go Amazon, stay for 1 year and come back for Microsoft with multiple levels bumps and fresh new sign in stock. Better yet if possible, try Facebook, Google, Lyft, dropbox etc
Haha yea I def agree with your first sentence. I don’t have any interviews lined up at the moment. Amazon happened by accident as I was just prepping but wasn’t ready to go full on interview mode yet. I applied to FB, Google and Dropbox but haven’t heard anything yet. I heard really good things about Lyft. Can I DM you for info on Lyft and their PM track?
Sure
Stay in MS. PMs in Amazon are different than in MS, and not really appreciated. You might win an immediate salary bump, but in the long term not a lot of growth and lower compensation than TPMs and Product Managers.
It’s a TPM role at Amazon. Are TPMs at Amazon not valued?
TPM is a role at Amazon. Depending on the team, TPMs are moderately to highly respected. PMs are not respected at all... My assumption is that the hiring bar for them is low, so many PMs who don't really add value
Also what technical skills do the PMs and TPMs are most asked about?
1. I don’t think you can change your level now. The hiring committee has decided. 2. Yes. The max base is 160, try to get to that. Your 1st year TC is: 145 + 50(assuming 50/30 split) + 5% of 100 = 200. I’d say, counter with 160 + 110 + 70 RSU or something like that, which gets you to 160 + 65 + 0.05 * 140k = 232k 3. Unless you get Tc growth, why stay. Move to AMZN or elsewhere. Amazon pays the lowest in FAANG FYI. 4. L5 to L6 Promos aren’t the hardest, you can get it in a few years. L6 and beyond is super hard.
Gotcha. It’s not too much to ask for 160 as a L5? And I agree that’s my concern as well is that there isn’t too much more to learn in my current team plus my onhire stock is fully vested. I know that amazon is lowest among FAANG which is why I’m not sure if I should ask for something like you suggested or decline and keep trying for others that might pay more. I have a chill life at MSFT and no reason to jump for a little more than what I make right now.
Doesn’t hurt to ask. Let them adjust where they want to. 160 is global max anyways. Yeah, make sure it’s worth it to jump, else why do it ..
I saw same L5 TPM offer last year. You can ask more stocks and sign on bonus.I doubt they will do anything with base
I tried haha. Apparently my request got denied. Not a penny more. I rejected it. I can see better growth here at my current team so why bother right now.
Makes sense.Try for L6.If you come as L5,you will.be stuck with BS tasks.
West coast or east?
Don’t come to Amazon
Why you say that? I'm interviewing rn
Do you think it’s a weaker company for PMs or because the offer was too low.
