I recently got an offer for program manager from Microsoft - new grad. I have 7 months of full time product management experience after graduation from UC Berkeley with Master's in Information sciences, and 3 months of product management internship experience during Master's. Have 4 years of software development experience in India. Microsoft has offered me $108K as base salary, $20K as signing bonus and $70K in stocks for 3.5 years. Relocation $5K. This is a Redmond job. I feel the base salary is a little less. I wanted to know from this community if this package is an average one ?
Dont go.
Dude, you only need 2 promotions to get senior in the valley and you need 4 in microsoft. The mini level sucks
That's less stock and less signing that I got coming straight out of undergrad almost 12 years ago. It's also just barely more base.
Do you have any offers elsewhere? What group is this?
I don't have any other offers..wdg group
If it’s WDG, RUN for your life. The other comments about setting your career back 5 years, slow career growth/comp progression and the “country club” org politics and culture are based mostly on this org.
I mean this is a new grad level 59 offer for someone out of undergrad
Basic for lvl59. Are you on a visa, or did you have GC/citizenship?
I am on opt..they will sponsor my h1b
Microsoft is one of the best places to be if you want to pursue a green card. Definitely don't go to Amazon, they don't do anything for you.
Any tips for negotiation? I had the first round of negotiation..reiterated my 10 months of PM experience after Master's though didn't stress on Master's from Berkeley point a lot..he did mention increasing base is almost not gonna happen.. increasing stock/bonus may still happen.. since I don't have any other offers I am running out of justification points...does it have to be with the fact that I am a female? Just thinking out loud
I'd say it absolutely probably plays a role and that makes me really upset. I've seen men with less education and experience get more than that.
Also can I negotiate to get a higher job level? Like one level up...is that entertained?
With a masters? Should be possible to get 60. If you interviewed poorly maybe not.
The masters isn’t particularly impressive and I’m not sure that your overall background seems super impressive. It’s possible to negotiate up a level but you don’t have other offers. You can also increase stock to 120 and increase signing without going up a level. I think if you were a dev, or you had finished at a top tier mba program it would be easier. I’ve seen folks in those situations start at 61. This is standard new grad comp, but on paper you sound to roughly like at a new grad level. You might actually be extraordinary, but what you’ve said doesn’t make you sound very unique. As always, getting other offers helps tell the story. It’s much harder to negotiate from a position of weakness. As mentioned it’s possible with your profile to push for 60. Sixty gives you a base of between 115 and 125
Thanks this is really helpful! I haven't been told my job level and neither did I find it in my offer letter...asking about it and asking for an increase to it to a recruiter, is that considered ok? This is my first time negotiating, I fear they might get annoyed!
Be respectful while talking to them and negotiate. The reason we women get stuck with lower salaries is because we think “ they might get annoyed”. A man would fight for what they think they deserve. You should too. If they have offered you the job, I see no harm in asking what the job level is. Based on that you can start the negotiation.
Thanks for the encouraging words!
This is actually the average offer they give interns that turn FTEs
Really?
Yes! And this is average. Stress on the average as in there's a rumor some of them are getting 120k stocks.
