On my resume I state that I am a Machine Learning Engineer partnering across Microsoft Research and Azure to build and productionize AI solutions. Is the reference to Microsoft Research and association with "research" the reason why hiring managers looking for machine learning engineers do not like my resume? Microsoft Research has a very bad reputation with some hiring managers on product teams in Microsoft, they think that researchers are lazy, but I don't know if externally the same reputation persists. #google #apple #facebook #microsoft #netflix #uber #stripe #square #twitter #machinelearning #machinelearningengineer #amazon
You should not join teams where managers think negative about MSR.
Why do you think they don't like your resume?
some places don't want to consider me for mle but for some infra position.
If anything research is a benefit...
May be you are targeting wrong teams/ managers? AFAIK MSR does quality works
Good point, probably they don't see much overlap in work domain. I probably have to do some more relevant work in that domain
MSR has very good reputation, maybe not as good as it used to be but still.
Very hard to say what’s wrong but MSR should be a net plus. I know several people who have hopped on FAIR, Deepmind , Amazon after starting at MSR. Some are MLE now, others are Research Engineers / Applied Scientists
yea, thanks I managed to get an applied scientist job at MS with internal transfer
In my experience microsoft research on resume is a plus.
