Currently at Capital One, but interviewing. Wondering how does Microsoft Sr. Designer TC compare to similar roles at FAANG? I have an interview with MS. TC: $95k
Probably somewhere around $140 for senior
Really? That seems low compared to the $200k~ TC I’m hearing Sr. Designers can pull at some of the other big tech companies.
Bonus would be in addition to salary.
should be 200k+ tc
Senior would be in the $200k ballpark
Bay Area?
I’m currently in the DMV (DC area) but am being considered for Redmond, WA.
I don’t have a ton of experience but recently went on a salary fact finding mission for FAANG. Main thing I found was that Bay Area salaries were very high compared to other regions, including other parts of California. Most of them use numbered levels as opposed to titles as well, though not sure about Microsoft. Most of the salaries mentioned in previous posts correspond with what I heard for the Bay Area. Outside the bay it seemed closer to 150-190 for an L4, which was the level band I was researching, and a likely baseline for you unless you have tons and tons of exp.
Ok so I got through the first round with MS and one of their docs I need to complete before flying out to interview is asking what my compensation expectations are. I’m either thinking of — A: asking for higher than market value of $250k OR B: evading the question. Thoughts? Someone mentioned here on Blind that being the first to mention TC is good because you can anchor them. Ps. 3 YoE
I’d be curious to know too, as I’ve been part of teams that hire, and salary expectations factor into how hard we might push. If we wanted a senior designer and they asked for WAY more than we were willing to offer, we’d likely stop pursuing that candidate. But these were small to mid sized teams, so the big guys may vary considerably. I personally wished I asked for a bit more when interviewing with google, but was able to negotiate up a little in the end. I usually give the advice to aim slightly higher than market but well within reason. Asking for 100 above is probably the same if not worse than evading the question, and makes your application look less serious. Asking 20 above might be more serious. Trick is figuring out what the market/expected rate is. I only have a small handful of data points from google outside the Bay Area, none from MS. Assuming those are even in the ballpark of your role, 200 seems like a number that is high but within reason. This is from my experience as well as 2 design contacts at google outside the Bay Area, all with more yoe than you, all with TC under 200. But obviously YMMV.
