Microsoft offer + Amazon interview in a couple weeks

Hi all,

I'm a new grad who received an offer from an Azure team
Base: 110k
Stock: 70k
Signing: 15k

I have a call to discuss some questions I have next week with the team. I also have an on site with AWS in a couple weeks and I want to see the results of that before I commit to anything. If they ask about when/if I'll sign their offer(Deadline is in November) what should I tell them?

Say I have an interview with AWS

Say I'm interviewing and not mention AWS

Don't mention interviewing at all

I want to try and negotiate but my other offers don't come close to Microsoft TC. I feel that without a competing offer in the same neighborhood they would be unlikely to give me any extra if I try. Thanks for any advice!

I was a ms employee and now working for aws. My suggestion is if you could get an aws offer, it would be much better than azure. AWS is trying to invent new features for customers while azure is trying to copy features from aws, most of the time.

Thanks for the insight! I thought that in terms of culture and W/L balance I would like MSFT better but I have yet to visit amazon in person to tell for myself. I would definitely like to work somewhere exciting where innovation occurs as well. If you're okay with going somewhat off topic, In terms of starting a career would you say that both are similar in regards to resume building and skills learned? This may be very heavily team dependent so I understand if its hard to answer.

Watch aws reinvent 2018 if you want to know their innovation hunger. Most competitive company on planet for a reason.

  • Azure competes with AWS and Google Cloud on price. AWS competes on features and functionality. Think about what team you’d want to be a part of.

If they’ve given you a deadline of November, why not just say you’ll tell them in November...?

That's a good point. I just thought I should have an explanation prepared should it come up, but you're right.

Look at the work culture of the company. At the end of the day, who cares what the product is. All of this is to support what matters, you and your family. You posted the numbers like they matter a lot, but I hope you don't make a decision based on $$$ alone. If I had two offers, I'd take a 10-20% cut for a better work culture any day. I hear Amazon and Microsoft are both undesirable.

In which sense is Microsoft undesirable? In terms of wlb?

What kind of school did you graduate from and what degree do you have? I want to make big bucks like you as a fresh graduate. :)
