Hey all I did a Microsoft hiring event a little bit back, before the loop my recruiter told me it could be with multiple teams, but it ended up only being one. I ended up getting the offer for a team which I believe is within the Commerce + Ecosystem larger org (not sure how org vs. team works @msft, I'm used to the Amazon nomenclature.) I have a more specific team name in the email from my recruiter, but I don't know if providing that will out me. Overall I'm excited to move to msft, but after reading some posts on here about this org (and it's predecessor, UST) I'm quite nervous to join. The team I am on at Amazon is honestly amazing, but I don't care for Amazon as a company. WLB is currently good (low low low sev 2s, infrequent oncall). The main reason for the move is to change things up and see how stuff works at another company. I'm fine with reduced TC, pay is not the be all end all for me. My recruiter told me I could be moved to the general talent pool to be placed on another team if I didn't think I would be a good fit on the one given to me. I'm worried the outcome of this random pool may be even worse, however, so I'm not sure what to do. I'm going to meet with the hiring manager next week and try to sus out the dynamics of the team, I would like to meet with a developer as I trust them more than management, but I don't know if that's in the cards. Tips on what I should ask them? I'm wondering if any of you have been in a similar situation, should I stick with the iffy team in C+E and move after a year (I heard moving teams is harder these days at msft) or should I enter the general talent pool and re-roll? Yoe: 2.5 TC: 245 Microsoft offer TC: ???? recruiter said if they told me the amount I couldn't switch teams after that point.. #microsoft #amazon #offer #pipMePlzJeffy
Do you mind sharing the kind of questions asked? Any if them Leetcode tagged?
Leetcode medium one really easy class design.
Thanks for your reply OP. I have my hiring event coming up, so this really helps. So 3 rounds of Leetcode tagged medium, and 1 class design. Should I focus on ~6 months high frequency ones or all months high frequency? Thank you so much for your help!
Which team?
You will find challenging work in many C+E teams. But, expectations from management are impractical. Date driven culture, management has zero remorse for burning people out. Highly political org culture, everyone wants to succeed at the expense of other.
Hey I’m currently working on a C+E team, happy to chat if you want more information In the same org, I have experienced 2 managers, first was very friendly, advocated for new technologies and let me self-explored the tasks, actually reviewed my code and helped me learnt a ton during the time. After the reorg, I was assigned a new manager who is more authoritative, micro-managing and I can’t really discuss anything with them. More over, the new team culture is just bad, everyone just kinda focus on their own work, PRs dont get reviewed thoroughly and are approved just to unblock people (also a person keeps sending out unpolished, long and intertwined PRs and expects us to review lol) That’s just my experience, if it’s wrong, someone else please correct me. For OP, I would recommend try to feel how the manager is like during the meeting. Also I have a friend who was in the same org but switched shortly after <1 year, so I believe switching is doable if you don’t fit. When I did the internal switch, the questions were super easy compared to the full interview loop at other companies.
