I got an email two days back saying team offered me a position. Now, recruiter asks for a phone call saying can't tell the offer via email. What could be the reason for this one. I have around 8 years of experinces and expecting L62/L63. I do have a european PhD as well. How much should I negotiate. Which components are easiest to negotiate. Does negotiations makes the relationship with manager a bad one. At MS, who makes the final negotiation deals: Hiring Manager or HR guy. Thanks for support here. I am in Azure org.
They don’t want to write the offer in email so you can’t shop as easily for a better offer elsewhere. They probably want you to verbally accept before they email it. This is the time to negotiate hard and don’t accept until they give you the numbers you want. Bullshit about other better offers if you need to and if they ask for proof, give them a taste of their own medicine by saying the other company won’t put it in email until you verbally accept lol.
Your negotiating power here depends on your position. Do you have alternative offers? Do you hate where you are or can you ride it out? If you have alternative offers, can easily get alternative offers, and/or don’t mind where you are then simply draw a hard line at your “best” (as in good/better/best) salary and share you cannot go below this number. Share if you have a competing offer, otherwise the recruiter doesn’t need to know anything else. Ex: In my previous role my TC was 65k, and 5/10 in satisfaction with where I was. I received an offer for 80k which was only a “better” salary. When negotiating led to no change in offer I ultimately accepted, because I had no alternatives in hand and wanted to leave where I was. Had my position been stronger I could’ve drawn a harder line and forced their hand or waited for the next opportunity.
This. I declined several offer already this year because I can wait. Keep interview and wait for right offer
Agree with your comments. HR guys are too clever sometimes and I already have oculus FB, amazon Alexa and Apple offers. What would be high end of L62 or range for L63 currently?
250K very high end for 63 if you show your FB offer.
recruiter wants to get an idea of your expected salary first to see if you’d accept. Ask for L63 and TC >= $300k.
Negotiation is quite normal, but if they also don't think you'll accept they might not formally offer at all. So they are probably assessing whether to go to a formal offer or not.
Negotiate hard
Is this in Bay Area or Seattle?
Is HM always involved in this? Is it good to have him on CC or not?

Always negotiate — no hiring manager will hold it against you. In fact I would say the opposite may be more true.
