Veteran tech blinders, I was doing some research on great recession in 2009. Msft was still pretty profitable but had a rolling layoff of 5000 people. But i see everyone consistently saying it's recession proof and does not do layoffs and job security is great. People keep pointing to its mountain of cash. Where is the disconnect?

Also 2009 was during a nationwide recession so that likely contributed to it as well.
"Good thing" - they almost never lay off people apart from those occurrences. After 9 years i have never seen a dev being fired.
What leads to "senior culture" at MSFT is that the company is good at creating a comfortable bubble around you and that usually causes people to get too comfortable to leave.
Mass layoffs is just an excuse for a "reset". And they will come on first occasion when company has an excuse to do it - like "financial crisis"
Nowadays it's way more normal to be WFH permanently.
All on all only occasion MSFT fires people is some crisis. Given at fb you can get fired after 1-2 poor review , MSFT is VERY safe place to be at.
