Microsoft to startup(Zeta)

I have really good team members and manager though work is not good. Also, Microsoft work life balance is good(Never need to work more than 30 hours a week) and shares has gone triple in last 3.5 years. Should I leave Microsoft and switch to Zeta for money as it will take me > 3years to reach the same base in Microsoft as given in Zeta. Also, learning curve would be better at Zeta.

What should i do? Is work good at Zeta? Is work life balance too bad at Zeta?

  • I don't suggest to switch if the wlb is good and you can invest some time to improve on your skills / leetcode / system design. TC difference isn't huge (MS is 15.6 + 10% bonus + 5.5 stocks = 22.5 vs 30 at Zeta if you ignore the paper money) and MS stocks may even help you surpass the zeta TC.
    Shoot for 50 TC after a year or year n half. Can probably switch to Google then!

      If I switch google from here, TC will be given less, right? But from zeta, it will be higher as base is higher?

    • It's not just current base n TC. If you're good, companies will pay top money especially if you crack Sde2. Right now it's not possible for you to even interview for sde2 position.
      With 2.5 yoe, it will be.

    I would suggest to continue at MS for one more year gain some experience, then you can try for SDE2 at good firms at much higher salary. MS has a good brand name you can go for any company you want given you have done good preparation. Also don't think about TC, it would any ways get 2x, 3x in 4-5 yrs.

    Why number of votes and comments are not inclined? Clearly move to zeta has more votes but comment section asks to stay at MS.

    Stay another year at MS.
    With ~2.5yoe, you can get SDE2 from all major companies including Amazon/U/Coinbase/OCI/Zeta/Razor/Rippling/Compass and all of them can pay 50L+ yearly TC.

    Think about it, Think long term and don’t rush.

    And good WLB/Culture/Mental peace has a value too, don’t trade it for 10% hike. You’ll regret it.
