Recently received offers from AAPL and MSFT. Which offer is better considering WA does not have state taxes? Microsoft Azure (Redmond)- Base - 159k Stocks - 150k/4 Sign on - 50k/2 Bonus - 0-20% Level - L62 Apple (Bay Area)- Base - 165k Stocks - 160k/4 Sign on - 60k Bonus - recruiter didn’t mention Level- ICT3 TC - 135k YOE - 4
ICT3 stocks can go much higher
I know. But my recruiter is terrible. He is passive aggressive and does not even pretend to listen to what I’m saying when I try to negotiate. He’s acting like he’s doing me a favor by giving the job offer!! Hiring manager is good though. If I eventually end up at Microsoft, I’m definitely going to rat on the recruiter’s behavior.
Talk shit about the recruiter regardless. If you choose MSFT, then talk shit to his face too.
With this money, You can buy a place to live in WA while its impossible in Bay Area
Apple's refreshers and TC growth >>>> MSFT
+1
I would avoid MSFT Azure. Things you hear about great wlb is not true & toxic politics you will be dealing with .....
And webext as well. Aka bing
can i DM you? @microsoft ru in azure?
I would suggest thinking long term - on which of these roles will give you the foundation for your dream career/role 5 years down the line. MS Azure is definitely known for bad wlb and politics. (so is Apple). But this is a generalization. The micro environment at your level and in your team can be different. Recommend enquiring about the immediate team members and manager.
Apple for the same reason as @apple-gr8.. mentions. Don’t worry about cost of living you refresher will handle those.Am not with cerner anymore just FYI
I think apple has better refreshers and TC growth otherwise you can decide
Apple has a growing presence in Seattle that you could push for to capture the same income tax advantage. If you have a good competing offer, they may even match pay to Bay Area.
+1 to get best of both worlds( TC, refresher and location). Although, I must say that reality prices in WA are crazy as well. Relatively not as crazy as Silicon Valley.
If you’re willing to live a similar distance from the office that you might in the Bay Area (think South Seattle or south of the city), rents are wayyy cheaper, too
In terms of compensation, MS offer looks good given it is in Redmond area ( lower cost and taxes compared to Bay area). Check the other factors too like which is more interesting work, potential for salary growth etc. TC growth is lower in MS based on my experience but there are always exceptions.
I’m leaning on MSFT because it is more of a general sw engineering job. Apple’s offer is for a team that works on a niche technology and Apple is the pinnacle in that particular area. MSFT team offers better future career opportunities.

Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
Definitely MS because of lower costs of living and no state taxes. Bay area comp should be at least 20% higher to make up for the difference.
No income tax.... The state will get you in the end with sales and property taxes (oh and car tag renewal fees)
Why does everyone keep parroting this bs? CA also has high sales tax, and way higher CoL. even if property tax % is low in CA, the actual amount you pay is high anyway due to property being so overvalued.
