Received a Principal Engineer offer from Microsoft and Splunk. Both of them are giving TC close to $380k.

Microsoft: 200k (base) + 20% (bonus) + $60k (sign-on) + $360k (RSUs vested over 4 years)

Splunk: 210k (base) + 20% (bonus) + $10k (sign-on) + $400k (RSUs vested over 4 years)

I've heard that Splunk is a great place to work and has excellent refreshers. But recruiter said that refreshers aren't guaranteed, but are generally given. Microsoft isn't too generous with refreshers, and has a 5 year vesting for those.

Microsoft seems to have better benefits including free health insurance and better 401k matching though.

Please help me take the right decision. Which one do you recommend and why?

Location: Seattle

YOE: 12 yr

Current TC: $300k

    What level you at Amazon?
Also consider and compare second year comp. Having worked at both the places can confirm Splunk refresher is definitely more generous than Microsoft.

Career growth is on you mostly. Welcome to Splunk 😁.

Splunk used to be extremely generous with RSU a few years ago. With growth it has slowed but much better than most companies. So long as you are not at the bottom tier, Splunk will take care of you. Compensation will definitely be higher than MS.

Please do also evaluate the team and the work.

Splunk refreshers are likely better than MSFT l65. Even at L65 it maxes out at 72k while at Splunk it could go higher than 200k.

Benefits at Splunk are crap but hopefully TC makes up for it

I’m a former Splunker, and current Googler. I still have a ton of friends at Splunk. Culturally Splunk has become pretty weird. They have pushed out most of the β€œideas” people, and with suffering creativity comes an odd mix of people being sad, and being driven to execute on stuff that everyone knows isn’t the right solution. The CEO is talented, and people like him.

My biggest concern is that they are trying to project themselves as a cloud-first company when their core products have been architected as on-prem applications, and are now trying to retrofit everything to build a cloud-native solution.

Sounds like the typical trajectory from startup to scale up to established
