I read good things about Microsoft as an employer, know they are a huge company doing lots of things. I'm a fullstack SWE (often SDM) well versed in Java, C++, C# and Python. I'm not keen on Windows, Office or VS though, prefer Linux and Rider for C# for example. Is MS worth considering? TC £135K (London) YOE 15 Thanks!
Microsoft is massive. They have a Linux subsystem for windows. Their cloud division provisions and supports various Linux distros. Edge runs on Linux. Long story short, this by itself is not a showstopper. See if location and TC work for you first, then worry about the technology stack.
There are many Linux teams, and I can't speak for those. Windows side, Microsoft has to be the most backwards company out there. I come from government SW which is supposed to be old and stale and even that is nothing compared to Microsoft. C/c++ is still stuck in the original fortran/C era of the 90s and this is for azure which is supposed to be new.
As an outsider tracking their product roadmap, 100% go for it. Satya has turned the company around and continues to push for growth. He’s attracted great talent at leadership level. Microsoft is the new aggressor in my books
Do you track it for work or for fun?
Who doesn’t like VS Code?
VS Classic always seemed slow, bloated and quite confusing compared to the Jetbrains IDEs. VS Code is my default text editor but isn't so good for C# ironically.
Sounds like it is worth keeping MS on my radar then, but be careful on which team
