I'm from the Midwest. All of my family lives there, and it's where I grew up. Moved to Seattle area to work for Microsoft about 5 years ago. I enjoy my work, especially learning from coworkers. We have two kids (ages 6 and 4), and my wife wants to move back to the midwest to be closer to family. I interviewed and got a decent job offer (~200k TC). The cost of living is a lot less over there, so we'd be ok financially. Considering family and money, moving back to the midwest seems like a good choice. Problem: I get the feeling I'll miss out on the interesting work and learning opportunities I'd have by staying in Seattle where I can work at MS, Facebook, Google, and other cool companies. I'm not afraid about money, and it'd be great to be closer to family. But I'll be giving up the excitement of being in a cooler tech area... Are we giving up too much to be closer to family?
Later on when you look back at your life family matters way more than work. There's still tech opportunities in the Midwest albeit fewer than Seattle.
Nope. I have a feeling more and more companies will open offices in Chicago as people realize they won't be able to buy a house in NYC, seattle, or the bay
I did it. No regrets.
Put fam before hardcore career choices. Will not regret later
Do what makes you happy
Move to Bay Area for a year. You’ll feel a lot happier back in SEA then.
It's amazing how many people I meet who are visiting my company's office in Seattle who say they want to move here because it's so cheap, the traffic is so light and there's so many things to do, compared to SF, NYC, DC.
Where did you get 200k in the midwest? Cuz ill take that offer in a heartbeat... fuck seattle. 200k in the midwest is godly. Please tell me so I can go interview asap
Amazon will do it in Detroit, Minneapolis, or Chicago
You can get that in Chicago at Groupon if you come in at a level 4.
200k in Austin, Dallas, or Houston is also do-able with enough experience.
Meh.. family is overrated.

Do it for the family. I’ve worked out here for about 10 years and I’m still not use to not having my family close by.
