Hello kind people of blind, I’m in a senior engineering position and been with my current company over 5 years. Total experience 6+ years. Haven’t been coding for a while and leading a team of 5. Expecting a promotion this year in an official lead position, but kind of fed up with the city. I’d like to move to NYC, possibly in a leadership role. What are my options? What kinds of roles/companies should I target? And what’s the compensation like for these roles? I’m open to relevant tech roles like product manager etc.
So in such a situation, where you have "unofficial" leadership experience i.e experience without the title, you have a better bet of landing a role in the West coast than the East coast. Reason is, West coast is a lot less formal about titles and values actual experience more. East coast is more formal and needs business titles similar to the position you are interviewing for. Once you get a manager title, then much easier to move anywhere in the country. Another piece of advice here is that you'll need to craft your resume very well. Hire a career or personal branding coach, and learn how to tell your story. Hiring someone can be replaced by spending a few hours per week on internet research on how to do these things.
I live close enough to NYC. The biggest complaints I hear when I visit other areas is that NYC is too congested and the people are always in a hurry and it’s fast paced. They are not wrong, but you mention you’re fed up with the city but wanting to move to one of the largest cities? If this is something you absolutely want there are tons of FI who are always hiring.
