Mini Cooper as first car?
For a first car for a fresh grad, how good a choice is the mini? Is it better to it buy new or used or lease? Location: Seattle
Great car, go for it. Make sure it is well inspected before buying. I would say anything <75000 miles should be ok

Horrible reputation for reliability. If you really want to buy one, sell it when the warranty is over. I’ve owned many cars over the years and at this point I suggest buying Japanese. Having an unreliable car sucks. Japanese cars are very reliable and require little maintenance.
Considering a mazda 3 as well.. Better deal I suppose?
The Mazda 3 is a great car if you’re wanting something sporty but still reasonably reliable.
Another +1 for Japanese cars. Live frugally it’ll pay off in the long run.
Follow up question, Is the BMW x1 a better deal compared to a mini countryman?

Audi TT. VW golf. Mazda mx-5. These are actually good budget sports cars
depends what you want. for me, I need something that can do a little off-road , can fit a bike or two and need next to nothing maintenance. so I got a subaru
Go with something larger like a honda crv. If you've been called short for so long feel slightly taller while you drive. Also, larger cars have a higher rate of saving your life in an accident. A mini cooper.....your decision. Also, roads in seattle are pretty bad. You will feel every bump on a smaller car.

All of these statements are statistically false, other than the fact you may feel “taller” sitting in an suv. Other than that, car safety is agnostic of whether you’re in an SUV or a small car. Smart cars have an extremely high safety rating compared to most large cars, and the safest rated cars globally are Tesla’s and Volvo’s (mostly sedans in their fleets). As for bumpy roads, that all depends on suspension, not whether you drive an SUV or not. My Golf GTI has a more comfortable ride than any other SUV I’ve sat in other than a Mercedes, Audi, or VW Atlas. Save yourself money, fuel economy (in turn, the environment), and the ability to park where you want, and get a smaller car. Additionally, they tend to be more fun to drive as well.
Owned 2. Least reliable car and just as expensive as a BMW.

If you like that style, I would go with a Golf GTI instead. More performance, more luxury, more reliable, and more practical as well.
Eh, VWs have some of the same reliability issues the Minis have. Maybe slightly more reliable, as long as you get a manual trans. Still expect to replace sensors all the time like any German car. Every VAG car I’ve owned ended up a nightmare.
Honestly, I’ve never had an issue with German cars (being from Germany, most of family has cars that are actually made in Germany). It may be “German” cars made in factories in other countries that produce lemons, but the ones produced in Germany have been solid in my history. The GTI is made in Mexico, and I’ve had zero maintenance costs on it the last three years.
