Here’s why 1) it’s going to be a blue collar job in the future. Everyone and their dog is now entering the market , meaning way more supply and even a harder arms race in preparing constantly 2) The opposite gender (women) doesn’t respect it honestly. It doesn’t have the appeal a pilot, lawyer, doctor , i banker or private equity does. You pretty much get immediately disqualified from the pool as soon as you tell them you are a swe ( oh one of those weird tech guys who don’t shower and can’t hold a convo, probably is obese , bad back, no social skills.) 3)limited growth prospects. For vast majority of swe doing just development, they will always just be considered tech support and not really included in business or product decisions. Who actually become the ceos or executives running companies? Product managers , strategy people etc, never swe. Ex . Sundar pichai was never an engineer at google 4) your job is a race against time. There’s 19 year olds doing more leetcode than you and 1000s of international students who are willing to do 1000+ lc to get a visa by getting an offer from a top firm. This pool is just increasing Look at any role models of “attractive or sought after men” in the media. When has it ever been a swe? No woman is dreaming in her childhood to marry a keyboard warrior getting excited over a leetcode hard. Edit: Examples in movies / shows Harvey spectre - lawyer For the TC police , 5 yoe , 🥜 for tc
I am a software engineer NOW because it is the best job NOW. If something better comes along then I will jump ship to that… just like I jumped ship from civil engineering to software engineering. Don’t worry about a hypothetical future that you cannot manifest or control. Just do your best with what you have NOW.
Same. I have none of the right background to be a SWE. But I’m smart and great at problem solving, and have the degree to prove it (physics PhD from a top 5 university). If SWE stops being a good job then I’ll go find the next new good job.
hearing a physics PhD from a top 5 become a SWE at Meta because it's in demand is kinda depressing I'm ngl
Sadly I agree. Question is, what do we pivot to
Regarding the opposite gender comment… If a woman (or anyone) turns their nose down at you because your engineer be grateful that something exposed their red flags early and move on without a second thought. But your in Palo Alto so expectations might a different lol. Shoot I lost my job when I first started dating my wife and she didn’t care. ✅✅✅
So what if people don't think it is. Honestly I don't live in the valley nobody knows what I actually do but I can still date and make friends. Would help if one would have social skills.
Well if you can’t respect yourself you can’t expect anyone else too. ✌️
If you're already in or already committed and trying to get in then I don't see why anyone on Blind would care about what you're saying Also if you went to a good school you'll get asked to be someone's CTO all the time. Just a matter of whether you're ready, available, interested, and don't want to do your own thing instead All those other jobs sound like a lot more work with a lot less utility for your personal life. I constantly find things I improve in my personal life that'd be impossible without programming, and that get easier and more useful the more I know
Again , cto but not ceo. You are again asked to be second fiddle while someone else runs the show.
I am founder of my own company. And someone else is the CTo. If you're not bright enough to lead a company, don't blame your career for that.
Read a post where a grandmom doing leetcode hard and I know it's about time. Just like any profession with low entry barrier, SWE is now like accountants in the past, the shortage of swe right now is due to visa restriction and lack of rigor in math education in the US, which will soon be removed given companies are expanding remote hiring accross the globe
I am curious to learn more about this grandmother who can do leetcode hards
For new grads this might matter, good luck faking years of experience while working at scale. The more senior the position, the more interviewers wil probe for details. As experience, especially at FAANG scale, is hard to fake, I don't see this as an issue.
Well, unlike low to medium skilled swe, there's an actual shortage of blue collar workers.
If that happens you won’t need to crunch leetcode so hard, so there is always a silver lining, lol
These are all defeatist and sound like something a not so matured person will write. Here's why: 1) It's going to become a blue collar job much later than most jobs. Thinking about an hypothetical future doesn't make any sense. I was trained as a materials Engineer, you know the one in theory that should be responsible for all the materials that make most advancements possible, yes there are very limited opportunity. Experienced folks will never be out of jobs 2. You could have just typed women. Anyways, not everyone chases prestige to please women. The one with self worth don't care so much. Also learn to hold a convo without making your job the center of it. 3. I am included in most projects. Not sure what sweat shop you work. Change it. 4. Let the 19year old lead a team of 50 Engineer building a non trivial enterprise solution, then we can talk.
Swe aren’t material engineers. They aren’t making real impact on the world for the most part. All we have is a bunch of keyboard warriors with poor social skills and obsession with leetcode. The 19 year old is hungrier, fresher and more willing to be trained and learn than a 40 year old grandpa swe , why would a company pick them
The young may have knowledge but what they lack is wisdom. One can only gain wisdom through experience, no two ways about it. You can prep for LC hard but can you prep for outage, weird bugs ?
🥱 Get a hobby instead of trying to conjure up make believe scenarios. This is what happens when ops don't post TC
