Just a rant.
I’ve been trying to change my job and break into product for a while. After applying to a ton of jobs I finally had a recruiter reach out and now she’s ghosting me too. She was the one who wanted to set up an interview but never did. I come from a finance background hence it’s harder to land interviews.
I see people on here post about their amazing salaries and having to pick between multiple offers. I’m happy for everyone and their success but also can’t help and think what I’m doing wrong. I’d be happy with just one offer :/
I had a call with a guy in the industry this morning and he told me “it would be hard for you to break into this industry” like what?? Why?? I’m looking for an entry level product role not to be a manager. It is nothing I can’t learn. Why would someone even say that? Anyways I’m upset and feel defeated.

You need to make a realistic plan. I’d advise.
0) generate a list of tech companies where internal transfer is easy (Goog, MSFT) by searching through Blind.
1) get a job as a data analyst in a tech company
2) do really well at the data analyst role for 1 year.
3) transition into product
4) celebrate!
Another path is to get a degree where the tech company hires a lot from. You can get a master in tech management from Foster school of business, at university of Washington. Microsoft hires a ton from here.
Hope this helps.
Seriously though. Please try to focus on what you are doing and Excel at it for a few years before jumping.
I have a fairly senior role at a FAANG company running product for a few key bets and I started out doing something fairly crappy in different field.
It takes time to make changes! As someone who has been in your shoes 20 years ago, I gave you the advice I would have given my 20 year old self.
You tell me without an mba or bachelors from an elite school can you get into a PE or an IB?
Finance industry reeks of elitism and tech on the other hand has always tried to flatten this barrier of access by so much of diversity and outreach campaigns.
Just keep trying man you’ll eventually make a break through. Try for smaller firms to get your head in. Maybe try doing a degree in data science or in product management and show some of your skills in a portfolio somewhere.
This board can be so misleading and toxic
In my opinion it’s much easier in some sense to break into data science or swe careers
Don’t get caught up in up in the FOMO of being a PM. Everyone hates their job so PM might seem greener. It’s the flashy thing from what you read. All the literature is all the good stuff, none of the bad.
