Hello, I am an EE residing in the US for past 10 years, i have been in the automotive industry in detroit. I was planning on moving to california, just for the better weather and a change in work culture. I got an offer from a start up in canada, better pay than what i am making currently and also a bump in the position from where I am at right now. The start up is in Montreal, they are a very small team of about 40 people and they have plans to expand. If at all this was within the US, i wouldnt think so much but I need your advice because I am on a H1B visa right now, with I-140 approved and moving out may close doors for me in the US, considering the visa situation. Can you please advice if its the risk worth taking the opportunity. Also Montreal will be a conpletely new culture adding the language conplexity. If there are any immigrants who moved to Montreal can comment. thanks so much!
No -horrible cold weather, high taxes and very very low salaries. What’s your current TC and offered TC? Also career progression in Montreal would most likely suck so it’s better to keep trying to extend H1B
Thank you. My base is 115K currently with 7 years of Full time experience. The start up is offering 135 base.
Oh wow is that USD? Irrespective of USD or CAD it’s a very good salary in Montreal .Whats the total comp?
Huge difference in weather, may not be so different in taxes compared to California depending on your bracket, universal health care in Canada
MONTREAL is a great fun city but not a tech hub like a TORONTO is. You will have to pickup French if you want to integrate well in Quebec.
Go for it and if you really want to come back do that once you get your citizenship.

As far as I know, If you have I -140 approved then you can transfer h1b to any other employer in the future. Moving to Montreal can lead to a PR specially it you really want stability in life rather than waiting for a greencard forever. Within 3 years you will be eligible for citizenship which is elusive in case of US. If s386 passes, then green card backlog will be eliminated in which case it will be better to stay in the US. I am from Cali on H1B with I140 who moved to Vancouver an year ago.
how do you like Vancouver? which company did u move to?
