Moonlighting Policies

I'm curious about the moonlighting policies at other companies, especially Google and FB. Do they allow employees to take on side projects on weekends?

I misunderstood, I thought you meant work related side projects. I think having a second job is usually explicitly not allowed in employment contracts.

    • Is there such a clause in the employment contract? That's what I'm asking. Are a few hours of contract work here and there considered a second job?

I think in california you can do it but be careful and talk to a lawyer first to be safe. It will be money well invested.

Typically, you need at least the approval of your manager. Restrictions apply.

And of course the obvious - never ever use company resources.

Not that you asked but IBM basically doesn't allow it. Any side projects need manager approval, including OSS. Your not supposed to work in any market that competes with IBM. Which is like every possible market.

  • I think they want to make sure that you don't have access to any materials, which belong to a competitor. They might get in legal trouble.
Since Google and FB do almost everything, it's not easy, who is a competitor.
