Let's say if you get an offer at Amazon, do you prefer to negotiate higher base or higher equity? If you could only choose one. What about Microsoft?
Amazon you don’t make any money unless you stay til year 3.
Isn't that the point of the 2 year signon?
Base pay, given that it’s Amazon we are talking about and their weird vesting schedule. If you plan on sticking for 4 years stocks seems like a better option given the rate at which their stocks are performing
There is no negotiating salary at Amazon beyond 160k Seattle and 180k California. The rest of your compensation will RSUs use plus a signing bonus. Year 3 always sucks.
Forget about RSUs, chances are you will leave with nothing vested
Definitely go RSU. Going RSU will mean they also give you more signing bonus for the first two years. So you’ll get the cash anyways even if you leave before the two years is up. By year 3 the stock may be worth significantly more than what was planned, giving you way more that a higher base would have done.
I took more RSUs and 2 years later they’ve appreciated over 200%. I stand by my decision
Good for u
For Amazon it is always better to ask for more RSU because they tend to become more valuable and if you max out on Base and TC then you get nothing at review time. If you are maxed on TC but not on Base then it is easier to give you a base increase at review time.
Large tech companies are far more giving with regards to RSU than with base pay.
