Move to Houston

I have been asked to move to Houston and frankly speaking I have never been into a situation where I have been asked to move. Therefore need some help here as so many questions arises. I am paying mortgage for my house here in Dallas and my parents live with me. I am also waiting for my wife's GC here. And insurances, bills etc.. life here seems ok good and I like dallas because I have spent a good amount of time here. So is it a good idea for me to move to Houston? Its not like I am getting any benefit of moving to Houston other than cheaper tickets to Asia but with an additional hassle of packing, moving, driving to Houston and start from 0 again. Is Houston any better than Dallas? Frankly speaking I have lived long enough in Dallas. Personally I think Dallas is better than Houston but that's because of my love for Dallas. I do have some family members in Houston though so not sure if that's going to be an additional help or drama. Overall what do you think should I move? Is it a good idea? It seems I am missing something here but just can't put my finger on it. Will be your help to throwing out questions and suggestions to help me understand the bigger picture. #dallas2houston #help

What did the company propose to compensate you for this transition? Houston is an OK city, and I'd have no problem living there. You will need to research office location and find a neighborhood. Housing is generally very affordable.

So far they haven't talked about any compensation. It was either you move to Houston or just move.

If you like your job, it wouldn't be a big deal for me to move, but I'd expect full relocation and some TC bump. Move on my own dime without any increase? Uh, no thanks. Maybe they are managing you out in a very poorly executed manner?

I have worked at JPM as a consultant and have seen an entire team asked to move to Houston or move out(of the company), just like your situation. if I were you, I would look at how much severance would I get and how much confident I am in getting a new job. There is also a fact that JPM pays very well, at least for VP and above, so considering all this, can you find a reason to stay at Dallas?

I'm not a vp so my pay isn't that great at all! I landed a job earlier but it was in the technology which I don't want to continue working on anymore but if the situation persists then perhaps I may have to apply again. What's keeping me in Dallas is a good question though. My house and the stability which I have till I have the job. :S

Totally understand. Maybe you should try out Houston for a few months yourself, leaving your family back in Dallas. You can always go back on weekends. It will definitely be expensive, but you buy some more time to figure out what to do.

I think Houston is a better city

JPMorgan Chase (๑•﹏•) OP Jan 15, 2020

I'm always curious to how do people think of Houston being better than Dallas? Houston always seems like a rundown City for some reasons. But what are your reasons to say that's it's better than Dallas?

It seems to be more diverse, more populous, and have a better restaurant scene.
