With all the VISA hassles on H1B and no green card in sight, would you be willing to move to London and take a 30-40% salary hit. TC:$250K YOE:5 #h1b #eb2
Yes, but I’d try Zurich first
Move to Amsterdam instead
Hmmm.. if I were considering any other countries, I’d try Canada or return to India. My specific query for London.
Yes, My wife is from London. The city is fun and food is great!
That’s what I hear as well. What holds you back from making the move?
It’s cold and grey so me and my wife want to live in California for few years. We go to London atleast 3-4 times a year to meet friends and family.
Yes, of course!
The weather sucks. Big time. Also your base will be very low so negotiate solid rsu or option grants. London proper ain't cheap. Rent or mortgage is still killer, esp with low base pay, but public healthcare is free, faangs provide additional insurance for some private healthcare as well. Suburbia is affordable.
I hardly spend 2-3k a year. It’s a much smaller drop in the bucket. Do you know if companies or Apple allows you keep your unvested stocks when you move internally?
2-3k a year on what? Apple does allow you to keep your stock for an internal transfer, but internal transfers have to be a stricty lateral move. The process is ill defined and not employee-friendly, I.e., your current manager can throw sand in the gears.
From what I know London doesnt have the same quantity and quality of tech jobs like US or India. Personally I knew someone who was left job he got in London which paid 2X more than his Indian position (he was working from remote location). He justified this decision by adding that he would earn less than permanently destroying his hard built technical profile.
India is just too competitive in my mind. The rat race is tough to keep up. similar to Silicon Valley, but here you justify it by being very close to the end product.
I dont disagree with the rat race, I was just telling perspective of a person regarding technical jobs who lived in London. Lot of people working in Bay area could have easily gone to Canada/Australia/NZ on PR. I knew someone who worked as hardware engineer in Intel bay area and is now doing a banking job in New Zealand. His prioiry was stability, not moving to India and he didnt care about work profile. However, most keep up with uncertainty rather than moving there because there aren't technical jobs there. Although its changing for Canada slowly.
London is very nice, many things to see in there. As a visitor the city was not cheap. Also not sure how much Brexit will change the climate there. They may not like foreigners as much these days
