My current household income is 320k in Chicago area and the offer from aws is 330k. I have a house that’s almost paid off and have a kid in elementary. Does it make sense financially to move Seattle area where I might have to invest 300k on down payment for a house.. looking ahead I can see myself make investments in Chicago area and making similar money with less stress.. Any thoughts??
Yoe/role?
If you like Chicago and your current job I wouldn't move for that little of a bump. That said Seattle is great and Amazon on the resume opens a lot of doors down the road if you are still chasing your career
Oh totally misread that. That seems like a huge bump. If your wife is in tech as well she could get a job at any number of companies here and you'd reasonably get to a household income in the $500k range
Yes that's the upside..she is in tech but with kids, we plan for her to take an active role in kids education. She might take up job later but for not anytime soon..In Chicago, there is flexibility that allows us to work and take care of kids.
Don’t move ..
Probably wouldn’t move unless you really don’t like Chicago. AWS is stressful in any part of that org. Housing here is through the roof in areas with good schools for the most part.
Yep, housing is throwing me off.. I can use the same money to invest in rentals in Chicago area.
Sir how is the amazon delivery team based out of New York ?
If your spouse also gets a job in Seattle then your household income will be 400k+? Its something to think about.
Relocate for $10k? No thanks. Unless you hate Chicago winters.
Don’t move
Yeah OP mentions "household" income is 300K in Chicago, and OP's salary alone in Seattle would exceed that. Come here if you are okay with the stress that comes with AWS and Amazon. But that's a hefty paycheck to have to deal with stress. Also, more cloudy weather, but then you skip the snowstorms. Housing is expensive but cheaper than the bay.
Also, what level at Amazon?

I wouldn’t move but geez $300k is a lot of income
