SDE 2 at Amazon with 26L, 33 stocks units in India. My wife is also working with 12B and 10L worth of stocks. Is it wise to move to Seattle now, considering she has to quit and travel with me? I'm not sure about living costs and savings in Seattle. Is it financially a good decision?

I lived in both countries. If you live as a single, quality of life is equivalent for high earners in India. If you get a kid and start a full family, US has better quality of life. But a good part of that is compromised in visa hassles. As an Indian you have almost no chance of getting a green card under current rules. So I would say your life would be worse but if your kids are born here their life would be a lot better.

Affording luxury items isn't my concern at all! Anyday I feel happier to drive around my City instead of a BMW into Indian traffic! Quality of life is subjective as it gets better if you earn enough in India. I don't wanna settle in US as I've pretty strong roots here. Someday I might even quit and take up dad's business. I feel staying here is the right thing to do.

  • It will dent your wife's career if she is not authorized to work. And it's hard to match your lifestyle in the US with a single earning

Now, L2 EAD takes around 6-7 months, and it's really hard to get job on EAD. This has been my experience, your wife's career will be severely compromised. I will recommend not to move because the financial advantages will be low and the hassle of moving plus the uncertainties will deplete your future plans. Ideal time to move to US is when you are single, with married men I think it's better to stay in India if your wife is earning decent amount. Plus family is the biggest plus point in India.

  • Don't move unless you can guarantee your wife will get to work. Apart from the financial loss, there's also all the emotional stress from not getting to work as a highly skilled individual.
