I live in the Denver area. TC of 105, Yoe 5. I work mostly on optimization of compute restrained problems using CUDA, NEON, etc. I am mostly looking to make more yet I'm concerned that the Cali taxes and living expenses would make it a wash. Also, it seems that most of the jobs are for webapp development and I'd rather not. If anything I want to get into real time embedded or ML. Should I consider moving? Does the TC outweigh all the extra costs?
No
Yes, I think your TC would jump to about 200k at least.
Did the math and for me and as a single person it would have made sense but I’d need to deal with a smaller place. As a married person with kids - even with the increase in pay it made no sense.
Depends on the TC you’re moving for, and that depends on the company and level / role you’re moving for. Also depends on your expenses; family or not, etc. It would have to be a lot to justify the move, but someone with your profile might get $300-$350K at google. I’ve been through these kinds of decisions before. Ultimately you’ll have to decide on concrete offers in hand. That means you’d have to do interviews, which means weeks or months of preparation. Hard to feel good about putting that kind of effort in for a “maybe”, but I think in these situations that is the only good way to do it.
Agree. See what’s out there and then decide
I moved from VA to CA in 2016 with wife and family of three kids. Went from TC of 142k (non-profit) to ~300k. Because we wanted to live in a single-family home and not pay through the nose, I rent an hour away from work. The move was worth it for me. I keep more of my money than before.
NoVA is expensive too. That's why. OP is from Denver.
I wasn’t near the beltway. Bought a townhome for $300k in 2005. Its value dropped 50% in 18 months. NoVA want *that* expensive.
No
Apart from living expenses, I feel the opportunities to work on niche fields like CUDA is hard in other locations but it's better here since most ML/DL applications needs to optimized to run on specialized hardware.
No
For house treat it as savings instead of cost. For other expenses, treat as 50% more. Then you have idea if you should move base on the tc.
