I'm interested in moving into Finance after a few years as SWE @ Google. I have a BS and MS in CS (unknown school, grades were okay) and am working towards an online MBA. How hard is it to break into Finance later in life? What are the odds of making it into BB IBDs with FAANG on my resume? Anyone here who's done it and can share more about their experience? Edit: Also curious to hear if it's possible to transition from a SWE position within a bank since some recruiters have reached out.
Don’t
Why not?
One must see the matrix for yourself. You cannot be told what the matrix is.
Dawg don’t do this I beg you Edit: NVM saw that you specified IBD. It will be a tough transition and you’re in an odd spot where you don’t really fit the hiring profile for an Associate (mainly through OCR and returning MBA interns) and VP hire wouldn’t make sense either.
Yeah, I basically lack the experience for more senior positions but don't fit the hiring profile for junior positions so I was wondering if there's other options. I know the theory and need to find a way to get practical experience on the job.
If you are willing to start below the managerial level and work super hard (since you don’t have finance background that takes ~5 or more years to become a manager) like 60-80 hours every week, you can give it a try. Also, you might have to take a pay cut during that transition. What’s your current TC? I can tell you how much you will make in Finance.
Current TC is $170k, hopefully $200k+ next year. Pay cut is fine though.
IBD will be rough hours to pull...
Your Google TC is better than IBD also...
I work in Finance with an IT background and I would seriously advise against this. All of my employers have abused the living hell out of me for my multiple competencies. I am now the de facto database administrator for a Finance reporting application and I am responsible for actually producing PowerPoint decks and explaining and providing variance commentary on business results. I have take IT off my resume as I am looking for jobs elsewhere.
Spot on. They stretch the living hell out of mid level resources and you are too busy to develop yourself... lose lose situation.
Sounds like a step down to me
I've had MBA classmates that used to be SWEs. After they graduate from MBA, some do get into core finance (IB type) positions advising industries they were familiar with. Now 10 years later a few made MD/partners with TC of over a million. But get into a top MBA school (Sloan likes previous tech background, or Wharton etc.), better not online.
That is, if you know you are passionate about this career track. If the only consideration is TC, it's just easier to stay in SWE track (&be a good one).
Which online MBA?
