Hey guys, I'm leaving Amazon. I've put in my 2 weeks. It's been really bittersweet. When I met my manager, he had no team. He was an IC on the dev list. I helped my manager get off the dev list by delivering for him. I became his right hand man as a top performer. In the last 6 months or so, I've had disagreements with my manager, now grown more powerful through politics. He emphasizes delivering results over proper engineering practices to solve problems. He's become more product oriented vs engineering oriented, and he did this to gain favor with business. He constantly picks fights with other engineering managers/seniors who try to strive for best engineering practices. He wanted me to be dominantly product focussed, but I wanted to focus on the tech in addition to the product 50/50. He dev listed me for not taking ownership of a product that I thought was utter crap. I came back with 5 offers at hand and put in my 2 weeks. We haven't really spoken since. Currently we went through a re-org and he came out on top while screwing over the engineers. Everyone is unhappy. They see this as a purely political move by the manager. Does this seem like a bit messed up? I wish I left on proper terms...What could I have done differently? What if I don't care for the product? I'm joining one of FNG. New TC: 305K YOE: 4.5
old TC? btw an end user does not know or care much about the behind the scenes engineering practices, tho of course bad practices will lead to a bad end user experience eventually
What was your lc preparation? How did u get interviews? Currently sde 1 at amazon and looking to move as well
Don’t you think you put too much energy/emotion to work? Find a place that won’t suck so much energy from you. There would be a place you could achieve following your heart while doesn’t really hurt your emotions. I felt you were mentally engaged too much with your manager’s relationship, just chill and focus on doing the work you like, it’s your life, don’t mix life and work too much ( which is quite often for those inexperienced engineers)
You are right!
What org were you in? If you don’t mind sharing.
I completely understand your frustration and disappointment. Unfortunately, the truth is 1) don’t ever love a company, as it can never love you back and 2) people will always put themselves first - it sounds harsh, but I’ve seen it play out so many times over my career at 4+ different companies, including goog. Your manager put himself first, and you should too by getting the heck out of there. In the future, consider being more vocal to your manager and skip level about their expectations and then manage them early and often.
Bittersweet? Proper terms? Lol... 2 weeks ago you started the thread titled "My final fuck you to Amazon" and now you are bittersweet about it... Get outta here already! 😂
I know! Lol. I'm being emotional as others have pointed out.
😂
one of FNG, so Netflix?
