May 14, 2018 39 Comments

I have a offer with similar role and pay from Atlassian. I am working in yahoo from past 2 years have seen lot of politics, instability and layoffs. I have lost my peace of mind working at yahoo. Is it a good decision to move to Atlassian?

Even aside from that generalization (which, mind, I agree with) the OPs characterization of /their/ feelings on the place sound like a get the heck out of dodge situation.

And Atlassian seems like a pretty cool place to work.

Far better than Oath. No bullshit, it’s more collaborative environment. People are considerate. There is only thing I found was, priorities change quickly. Founders call it correcting the course of action.

Do you mind sharing your experience interviewing with Atlassian? Is phone screen a typical easy/medium Leetcode interview? Any pointers? Thanks

It was a data engineer role. Interview process will be different.

In my experience every time you have doubts, come up w a negotiation strategy. Ask yourself, how much should they pay you so you would run and not doubt? Then ask for it. It usually works!

Yea happens but you got low-balled even for 4 years. Here in Bay Area people would get 150 to 160 as base and at least 100k RSU if not more. Well Atlassian is good for culture and wlb but I would suggest to also try elsewhere before joining if you got time.

I know that, I am desperately looking for a data engineer role to learn and apply spark and AWS. I got lot of rejections for not knowing spark. I am making a short term loss for a long term gain.

Some projects are being moved to other places like Ireland where hiring engineers is less expensive. That leaves extra Engineers at Sunnyvale office, and there are lay offs every quarter. Every engineer here is trying to save his job, so he tries to create as many hurdles as possible. Like deliberately giving wrong information, when you ask them and just before pushing code into production he would change the word. You have to get everything in a email, how ever small it is verbal communication is useless. There is a groupism where few people push their code into production without any review and code quality. But when it comes to rest of people they make useless comments to delay production push and prove you are a slogger, low quality engineer and slow performer. A significant amount of energy is spent in proving other than engineers are wrong rather than working towards a better design/ solution.

this is just sad. gtfo immediately. almost anywhere you go in the valley can beat this. Engineers need dignity and should take pride into their work.

Yahoo .. what is the company even working on?
the general rep about Yahoo in the tech industry is that it is a tiny branch of some big telecom firm. It’s stopped attracting good talent a long while back and all the good people have left. You don’t want to be viewed as the one who did leave because no one else offered you a job

Yahoo makes most of they money by showing online ads to its users. It also makes money by having an Ad exchange. Now Yahoo and Aol got merged and its called Oath. I still call myself a yahoo employee as I joined before merger acquisition. On paper I am an employee of Oath.
