No, comp doesn't compare to T1 companies in the Bay Area / seattle / NYC.

Comp isn't everything when your house costs $1M. Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Amazon are all here and paying great salaries. You won't go poor or have to live in your car like the bay

I make $150k in the Bay where a 1br condo runs ~$800k. My brother makes $100k in Austin, where his 4br mansion of a house is paid off b/c it cost less than $250k. 50% difference in pay, 300% difference in cost of living. So yeah, it doesn't compare --- the comp is way more in Austin!

When you get there, just keep Austin weird

Austin stopped being weird 30 years ago

Austin companies seem to underpay relative to either coast.

Microsoft Ejaz Khan Jul 13, 2017

Glad you think that. Now stay the fuck away

Austin is also significantly cheaper to live in than most places on either coast that pay more.

I'd love to move to Austin. Sure you earn less money, but you get a much higher quality of life. I could get a 4 bedroom house with a pool there for half the price of my two bedroom here.

It's a college town .. not many big tech companies ... salaries are average... weather is decent ... traffic is getting bad.. housing market is super hot !! No state tax and cheap gas.. 🀠

Microsoft Ejaz Khan Jul 13, 2017

Ah yes not many big tech companies. Between that and the fallacy of low salaries. Keep throwing the rhetoric out there - it helps keep the ass holes out of this city at least

Twitch XmJz42 Jul 13, 2017

Not many big tech companies at all. Just Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Oracle, Dell, Atlassian, VISA, Facebook, Google, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, IBM... πŸ™„

Definitely considering it. Single income family in the Bay is like throwing a condom at a brick wall. So difficult to save up to afford owning. Would be far more feasible in Austin. I could buy my house with cash there. Considerations holding me back is it's Texas, geography is flat and the nearest ski resort is a flight to Denver. My wife is severely allergic to mosquitoes bites, and I hear the allergies can get bad. Heat is another factor but not a deal breaker. Other than that I like the town.

Honestly if outdoor living and sports are a passion, don't bother with Austin. It's geographic location is really bad in terms of interesting things to see and explore. The state parks are dull and not worth repeat visits. This is no exaggeration but you can see more amazing natural beauty in a week in Seattle or SF than you can in a year in the central Texas area.

Planning to make a few $M and then move to Austin to really live

Apple EpyonV Jul 14, 2017

Was given the option to accept an M1 position and relocate to Austin for it. It was a No. Far too hot for my taste, not major enough a city, and even though the BBQ/music/no state tax is nice, there's not enough draw in the city to take me out of my current locale. Cost of living is much more reasonable, but I've found that higher comp = "money that travels better" πŸ˜† YMMV
