Moving to Bay Area for Google - where should I live??

Sep 23, 2018 274 Comments

If I'm working in Sunnyvale / mountain view, what do you think is the best place to live?

Single, female, 28 - like Al fresco dining / restaurants, beaches, walkable urban areas. Hate driving in my car.

Don't need to bar hop. Don't mind seeing cute families around.

TC will be $420k - so don't think $ should be a problem.

Redwood City has a great little downtown (walkable, bullet trains, lots of concerts/events in courthouse square, tons of restaurants, tons of nice, new apartments) and is closer than San Mateo to MV. Of course, MV itself sounds like a good fit for you as well, but the cost premium isn’t worth it IMO. Who cares what your TC’s still dumb to throw money down the drain.

It's the opposite in my experience. There's way more tech talk around SF than in the South Bay, and it all comes from the techies that moved here in the last 5 years. South Bay hasn't seen that many new grads move out here and there are way more natives living out here than in SF proper.

But I agree about not wanting to hear about algorithms and other work-related stuff at dinner.

Look for a place close to downtown Palo Alto/Menlo Park. Mountain View might be more price reasonable.
If you optimise for commute, going to SF on weekends for dining/culture will be a good compromise.
Don’t bother going more south than mountain view nor more North than Menlo Park. East Bay (Fremont/Newark/Milpitas Etc.) is a no go.
Living in SF will be richly rewarding, but you will hate your life commuting to the Peninsula every day.
    Good Luck 😀

Agree. Palo Alto isn’t beachy, but Stanford campus, the Dish, and the hills are beautiful and accessible. Santa Cruz for the beach on the weekend.

Or, get transferred to Seattle where you can get everything you asked for at Goog without owning a car.

Single, Female, 28, ex-Microsoft, L6. This should be on the front page of New York Times. Way to break the glass ceiling. You go girl! PS- I lived in SF and moved to Sunnyvale recently to avoid the commute. Highly recommend living near Sunnyvale or Mountain View Caltrain stations.

If you want some walkabillity with a very short commute look for places close to the intersection between Murphy and Washington avenues in Sunnyvale. It is also close to Caltrain so you will have an easy connection to SF.

Live inside the triangle south of 101, west of 237, and east of 85. Will be close to google campus (bike trail available) and within 8-10m of Castro street (downtown Mountain View)
